How to handle my tracks?

Post by Noyd » Sun Jun 20, 2010 4:01 pm

I wonder a couple of things. My main goal is getting signed to a label, but i also want placements in Tv&Movies etc.
If i have a placement, how does that effect the track being released later on a label?

Also, Can i send the same track do diffrent listing? Lets say two listings that has close deadlines.. and both get forward?
what happends then? many times the listing doesnt say if its non exclusive, or not.
Lets say i do a digital release of some tracks on Spotify, and Itunes, are they still good to be sent for listings?

best regards

Typically it seems that the licensing (Film/TV placements) and the label markets are two different things that cross-pollinate. Years ago Moby had a song from one of his albums featured on a car commercial. You can imagine how that placement may have affected the sales of the album positively!

I wouldn't hesitate to submit to as many opportunities as possible (that are appropriate for your songs, obviously) until you get a "bite". If you get a contract from a library or publisher that doesn't allow you to sell your music on iTunes, for instance (which would be rare, I think), then you can always say no, or re-negotiate. In the meantime, get your music out there on iTunes, etc. As I mentioned before, the licensing market is different from the "selling straight to the public" market and most libraries would allow you to have your songs in a non-competing market.

If you get forwarded to two companies at the same time with the same song, it's no problem because one or both may never contact you anyway, and if they both do, then awesome, you have a choice. An excellent problem to have, IMO!! :D

Put it out there!

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

You should be OK, just make sure to sign NON-exclusive deal.
It is very unlikely that a record label would sign you if publishing rights to your best songs belong to someone else.

Thanks alot guys, that was what i needed to know. Then its no problem if those to markets doesnt clash
with the agreements. Ill do both and get the best of both worlds. Ill continue on Taxi becouse here, im more productive then
i ever was, and i got my first forward already (offtopic), i stepped up and has already improved alot in a couple of month.
They main thing was to not be lazy and take shorecuts, and that really payed of.

In the listings, it doesnt always say if its exclusive or not. But if the get in touch with me i haft to sign a contract wont i?
so everything is in there i suppose. Just hope i understand it =)
