With a mac can I continue to save a finale/garritan file

Post by charlie2 » Sun Aug 01, 2010 4:58 pm

Hi everyone.

This is important to me. As you may already know I'm thinking of going mac, but I need to know something for sure.

With my pc I always saved finale files with either the garritan instruments or soft synths playing it. I saved them from finale as an audio file and put them on my desktop.

I then imported them into pro tools; added reverb/tracks/whatever and then saved them again onto the desktop to be burned on a cd.

WILL I BE ABLE TO DO THIS WITH MY NEW MAC??????????????

I'm pretty sure garritan works on macs...but it's important that I can continue to work this way with my new mac.

Thanks again for all the help and answers.

You'll have to check with Finale to see how to do this. I'm not sure if Finale is a different application for Mac and PC, in other words, do you have to buy it separately? I jumped ship on Finale years ago in favor of Sibelius so I'm not up on how they do things anymore.

As far as Garittan goes, I'm pretty sure their Aria application is cross platform and Kontakt is for sure, if you use the Kontakt version of their instruments.

You can certainly bounce an audio file and continue to work on it in Pro Tools in either platform. The basic functionality is exactly the same, it's just a matter of making sure you have Mac versions of your software, which isn't that big of an issue these days unless, of course, your software is either one or the other. But I know Finale and Kontakt are cross platform, I just don't know if Finale sells both versions together.

Good luck!

I'm also not sure whether you have to buy a Mac version for Garritan and Finale or if you can just download the installer for the mac versions. You need to call or email both companies to see what you're going to be up against there. But I use both on Mac's and they work fine and (once you get them installed on your mac) you'll be able to do the exact same thing your used to doing now.

I really just wanted to add a plug for Sibelius. I used Finale since version 2 way back in the late eighties. A few years ago I downloaded the trial of Sibelius just to see. Within a few hours I was blown away at how much easier and faster it is to use. There is really no comparison between the two from an input and manipulation standpoint. If you do a lot of score writing, you really should check out a demo.

Then, if you DO have to buy a mac version of finale, you might want to consider the cross-grade to Sibelius. It will probably be cheaper and you might also find out that its better and faster to use.
