Howdy Charlie2 (and the rest...)
As mojobone mentioned, http://sayvee.com is definitely an option. We've been working on this for the past 2 and a half years and just launched it especially for artists who don't know anything (or little) about website building. There are a bunch of great artists using this with examples here: http://sayvee.com/artists
I actually don't know much about HTML or CSS myself but had a band for a bunch of years and always struggled to have a great looking site that was inexpensive and integrated well with a mailing list / blog etc. I know this whole process of building a site can be super frustrating & confusing.
There's a free 30 day trial here: http://sayvee.com/signup and I'd love your feedback on it since we're in BETA and have made a lot of tweeks based on user feedback. Some of the major things that are included in it are: Drag 'n Drop editing (where you make changes in real-time), built-in mailing list, blog, media galleries, music player to sell your MP3s, your own ".com" address, Facebook / social network integration, a pile of free themes, and hosting. Custom designs are also available by Sayvee or anyone that knows anything about CSS.
Would love to hear your thoughts / suggestions / critique...

Re: Who do composers use to built their websites?
Ya, as mojobone mentioned, http://sayvee.com just launched a few months ago and has a lot of great features built into the site-building process. Super easy to set up and edit your own site using drag 'n drop along with a bunch of great designs to choose from.
There's a free trial on the site there as well and it's got some cool things like a built-in mailing list and blog. I'm not sure of all the things that hostbaby offers but Wordpress was definitely a lot more confusing to figure out...
Peace.
