A Songwriter's CD

Post by standardtunes » Sat Aug 07, 2010 9:05 pm

It seems clear that the odds are stacked pretty steeply against songwriters per se these days. Every performer wants to be a singer-songwriter and that's mostly who labels want to hear from (bring your songs, bring your act). Certainly, as one producer told me, it's the survival of the fittest for songwriters. With that in mind, I decided some months ago that my jazz-pop songwriter demos needed to be out there working for me as a CD. I had work-for-hire agreements from the players and an agreement with my vocalist. CD Baby > iTunes > Amazon is cheap... So why not? I read and asked a few relevant questions on Taxi forums, became an ASCAP songwriter and publisher, and finally got it up on CDBaby last week; iTunes just launched. If anyone wants to sample the result, here's a link below. If you like Norah Jones, Madeleine Peyroux et al, you might even want a track or two. To any other new-ish songwriters thinking along the same lines: as you'll see, it can be done!

Well John, I went to cdbaby to listen and bought the album. The songs were great and so was the vocalist, Christine Tavares. The mixing and mastering could have been better, but the songs and vocalist easily overcame those shortcomings. It is very Billie Hollidayish, which imo is timeless.

Len911, that is so kind of you. It's a real shot in the arm to get a response like that. Many thanks. John

Hi John

Congratulations on a great CD! I've just bought this off iTunes (for some reason I couldn't get the preview to work on CD Baby) and I'm really enjoying it.

Cheers

Wonderful. Thank you! You wouldn't happen to have a couple of hundred thousand close friends who like the same stuff, by any chance? Just kidding, really appreciate it. JOHN

Thanks, MJAB. Your location, Tasmania, caught my eye right away, because CDBaby let me know that someone from Tasmania downloaded my CD the other day. For anyone who doesn't have it at their fingertips, Tasmania is in Australia. What a thrill that is for an aged kid from Ohio. My CD is selling like hotcake, by the way.
