Has anyone ever heard of musicreports.com? I received a notice of intention to obtain a compulsory license for 3 of my songs on behalf of their client Apple/iTunes. The songs are already on iTunes through CDBaby so I don't understand what this is. They want me to send a W9, which would of course give them my social security number. It seems a bit fishy to me. I looked on WhoIs and the person listed is James Parra. The company is in Woodland Hills, CA.

An inquiry about a compulsory license and a request for a W-9 is generally regarded as good news; if someone wants to cover your song, they need your W-9 so that they can claim the royalty they'll be paying you as a business expense. Alternatively, this could be an early indicator of a licensing deal in the works, but compulsory usually means statutory and mechanicals; you'd usually hear from your PRO first, if it were due to TV or radio plays. (or rather, it would show up on your statement and you'd hear nothing from your PRO, the usual case, heh) Congratulations.

MRI is who pays royalties to many of us for the Harpo Productions shows we write music for. They do lots of other things certainly. Anyway, I get checks from MRI every quarter.

Yeah they are legit. They do the licensing for a couple of big name shows that I write for and I get royalty checks from them every quarter.

They pay a per drop. The pay is the same for a 2 second cue as it is for a 1 minute + cue. This is kind of bad if you have long placements, but great if you get a bunch of short 2-5 sec. drops because (depending on the details of the agreement) you could make 2 or even 3 times as much as you would from a BMI/ASCAP licensed show.

I would definitely look at it as a good thing.
