New member here - James from the UK

Post by JamesF02 » Sat Dec 11, 2010 8:45 am

Hey everyone,

I'm James from Sheffield in the UK and I can tell you it feels great to have finally joined TAXI after doing plenty of lurking around these boards for quite a while :P. I started to believe my standard was high enough for me to join so I took the plunge and signed up, and I know it can be a long slow game but I hope to be a member here for years to come :).

I'm not a singer/songwriter and just like to focus on producing instrumental music and my favourite genres for doing this are Classical, Pop, R'n'B, Hip Hop and Electronica/Dance - so when I've been here a while hopefully my artist profile will be flowing in a whole load of such music. That's not to say I automatically rule out other genres and recently I've bought a nice VST from EastWest called RA so I can dabble in ethnic music.

I don't know if this is cheeky as it is my first post but I did submit some instrumentals to a Hip Hop listing a few weeks ago and have recently found out they have been returned. I'm fine with that but I can't put my finger on why 2 of the 3 tracks I submitted were returned. It was a Y/N listing so there was no critique and the only checkbox that was ticked was 'music' for the reason for not getting forwarded. The other one was not stylistically on target which I could understand, it was too uplifting for a "bad ass beat" (listing's words not mine). Here is the listing actually:
HOT, FRESH, UPTEMPO, AUTHENTIC HIP HOP INSTRUMENTAL tracks needed by a popular network launching a new reality show. Your contemporary, bad-ass beats will help immerse viewers in the dope world of mixology featuring the master practitioners. To nail this listing, beats must be LEGIT and UP-TO-DATE with a UNIQUE, ENERGETIC mix of FAT LOOPS and MELODIC RIFFS that can hold interest without the aid of vocals. Vinyl dirt, bouncin' brass, random stabs -- all welcome.
I would be grateful if anyone could listen to “Final Mission” and “The King” (they are only short) and maybe hazard a guess as to why they were returned (link to profile is in my signature).

Lastly I would just like to say these boards seem great and the bunch of people on here are too, I feel fully confident in this statement as like I said before I have lurked around here for long enough :) .

Thank you for reading.

James: I listened to all three of your tracks, liked them all. My genre isn't instrumental or hip-hop, so I can't tell you why they were returned. I did like the first track the best. At any rate, welcome to the forums, and best of luck to you!

Hi James.

Also a newbie here from the UK. Nice to see you.

Regarding your track...

I can only guess the beets weren't bad ass enough.

The drum track seemed a bit puny and light compared with the rest of the soundscape.

I think the drum track needed to be grittier.

However, I'm no R&B/HipHop expert, don't even like the genres that much so perhaps I'm not the best judge. It's just what occurred to me.

Cheers
Darren

Hey again,

Thank you for all your warm welcomes as it's much appreciated and I hope to participate regularly where I can :) .

@ Ott & Darren: Thanks for listening to the tracks guys, it's nice to hear somebody else say that they like them and yes Darren there is a chance it could have been the drums but I try to lay off the grit vibe where possible ;), ah well who knows. I'll definitely submit them to appropriate listings in the future though and take any returns on the chin.

Bye for now.
