Numerical scores on critique sheets

Post by Esther » Wed Jan 19, 2011 6:22 am

I was just wondering what scores other songwriters get. First I got 5 or 6 for each criterion then 6 and 7 for the latest one.

I know there's no such thing as a "good" or "bad" score and and it's just to give you an idea about the level of your song but I'd like to know if my scores can be considered average, low or high... :)

Hi Esther
First, you need at least a few critiques to draw conclusions since they will vary. One screener's 7 might be another's 8-9, for example. And they are human and sometimes there are strange variances due to that ridiculous "human" thing.

My experience is 5 or below usually means the screener doesn't think it's up to reasonable industry/commerical par, 6 is 'just OK', 7 is you're definitely in the zone, 8 is very good, and 9-10 is a home run.

Again, don't forget it depends on screener and the particular listing. And there are no absolutes in the world. A track I have that has had low scores-- 5's and 6's if I recall, is in a library that is picky. That doesn't mean the screeners are wrong, it doesn't mean the library is right... It's not a 'bot' world.

If you consistently don't get 7's or better on most categories for a song, I'd give serious consideration to improving it. There's a good chance that if many screeners hear it a certain way, industry folks will too.

Good luck!
:) Casey

Thanks, now it will be easier to "interpret" those scores.
