Sometimes I find that when I'm getting overwhelmed by all the song ideas I've started, it's because I'm really avoiding FINISHING any of them (either because it's the "hard work" of the process, or I don't feel like any of them are worthy of being finished). Could it be that you're drowning in unfinished version because you're going through a similar period in your writing? Finish what you start, and you'll naturally be more organized...
Yep, that's me in a nutshell. I'm buried in unfinished ideas. It's very easy to want to continue to refine and refine, but my goal is to finish some things and move on. Glad to hear it might just be a phase.
One of the best ways to move through this is to set up a schedule with blocks of time. Have block of time for noodling, creating, writing new ideas and a a DIFFERENT block of time for editing, polishing and completing. For one thing - that will allow you creative mind more room to play because you're not trying to edit while you're creating. And you will be completing things because you have time set aside to complete them.

Debra

Thanks again for all the tips. It's not that I don't finish anything. I've completed and signed close to 65 pieces in the last couple of years. It's that in addition to those I've also got tons of uncompleted material in various states from just a cool patch idea to just about done. And since I put my studio together four years ago I never really created a system. It just all sort of piled up in one spot.

I've essentially dialed this all in over the past couple of weeks. I found some cool little tools to help and have incorporated lots of ideas from these posts. I'm thinking of puttingntogether a little movie that shows where I started and how it's ending up. It might be helpful to others. Although I doubt any of you were nearly as unorganized as I was. God I hope not. ;)

I think that would be great!

Hi Bryan,

That's such a general question, it's tough to know where to begin. The above answers, like Chuck's and Mazz's are great! And of course, everyone has a different system for organizing music files and setting up computer files. But what exactly do you need help with when it comes to being organized?
