Clapton-ish Bluesy Love Ballad

Post by ernstinen » Tue Apr 19, 2011 3:01 am

Hey All,

Here's a love ballad that I always thought would be perfect for Eric Clapton. I know he writes most of his material these days, but who knows?

YOU CAUGHT ME CRYING

I seem to be the one who's strong these days
We're talking 'bout going our separate ways
But it's just something neither one of us could do
So go to sleep, my girl turn off the light
And if I stay up once again tonight
It's just because my guitar has to play the blues

And if something might wake you up
There's nothing I can do

(CHORUS)
You caught me crying... You caught me crying
I'm finally letting out the things I can't say
You caught me crying... You caught me crying
I hope these tears will help the pain wash away

If I were in a different time and place
I'd try to put a smile upon my face
And just pretend that there is really nothing wrong
But now I'm looking at a rising sun
And when you wake up when the night is gone
I'm going to touch your heart and play for you this song

And if I find it hard to sing
It's just 'cause I love you

(CHORUS)

You caught me crying... You caught me crying... You caught me crying

(CHORUS OUT)

I enjoyed that...it's one of the better songs I've heard on these forums. :)

May I suggest...in the chorus, I would sing:

(CHORUS)
You caught me crying... You caught me crying
I'm letting out the things I just couldn't say
You caught me crying... You caught me crying
I pray the tears will help the pain wash away

Ern, I think it is an excellent song, it reminded me more of Roy Orbison than Clapton except for the guitars. I know he already had a crying song, but it would have been a good fit.

Thanks Stuart & Len for listening!

Len, I think the Orbison connection has to do with my vocal vibrato. My singing teacher in college told me that a person's vibrato is natural, and there's nothing you can do about it. I've tried and tried when singing rock or blues to tone it down, to various degrees of success. But when I sing emotionally and don't think about it, it sneaks back in. Maybe I should sing opera, like my college teacher wanted me to do! That ain't me, babe! --- plus, any song with "crying" in the title/chorus will always be compared with Orbison's great song. I love k.d. lang's version as well.

Best regards,

Ern

Another dandy.

Are these recent, or from the archives?

You have a ton lately and was wondering if the creative juices were in hpyerdrive:)

Great feel to this. Still like your vox up a tad. Love the harmony.

Beautiful singing. I especially loved how the melody and chords worked so well together, seems like a lot of songwriters struggle with that. Great stuff!

Thanks Paul & Brent! Paul, my recent posts have been mostly new stuff. This song, though, is a few years old which I found in the archives. I can tell it was at least a year ago because --- sniff, sniff --- I played my Strat through my old Fender Deluxe Reverb which I had to sell to pay the bills. What a great clean amp! The guy who bought it told me that for a little more $$ he could have a REAL Deluxe rather than a reissue. I've seen a lot of guitarists play through 2 vintage Deluxe Reverbs, and woah what a sound. They say those were only 22 watts, but they are MUCH louder and cleaner than that! I'll buy another one someday when my ship comes in. :D
