What's Changed?
We are told we must explain things in intricate detail when we write lyrics, especially Country lyrics.
Anyways I was reading through this lyric and suddenly it struck me!!
What's changed,I know they have broken up and the relationship is over but I don't know why.
Now there's no denying it's a magnificent song.
Have I misread the lyric.
The lyric,
Here Comes Goodbye.
I can hear the truck tires coming up the gravel road
And its not like her to drive that slow,
Nothin's on the radio
Footsteps on the front porch, I hear my doorbell
She usually comes right in, now I can tell
Here comes goodbye, here comes the last time
Here comes the start of every sleepless night
The first of every tear I'm gonna cry
Here comes the pain,
Here comes me wishing things had never changed
That she was right here in my arms tonight,
But here comes goodbye
I can hear her say I love you like it was yesterday
And I can see it written on her face that she had never felt this way
One day I thought I'd see her with her daddy by her side
And violins would play here comes the bride
But here comes goodbye, here comes the last time
Here comes the start of every sleepless night
The first of every tear I'm gonna cry
Here comes the pain, Here comes me wishing things had never changed
That she was right here in my arms tonight,
But here comes goodbye
Why does it have to go from good to gone?
Before the lights turn on, yeah and you're left alone
Oh, all alone,
But here comes goodbye
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Here comes goodbye, here comes the last time
Here comes the start of every sleepless night
The first of every tear I'm gonna cry
Here comes the pain, Here comes me wishing things had never changed
That she was right here in my arms tonight,
But here comes goodbye

Re: What's Changed?
It wasn't her. It was someone else coming to tell him that she had died.

That's a bit obscure Len, though it does makes sense kinda, but where does it say that?

Re: What's Changed?
I just looked up the video on youtube. Maybe I should have done that first, lol, however, I don't know if it helped much, because someone had died because there was a grave, and the woman kneeling by it said, "tell my boy, I'm gonna miss him so much". The boy that I saw was next to his grandfather, so I don't think he died, it must have been the mother looking at her own grave.
I just went by the lyrics when I made the guess. You will have to tell me the obvious, or what you get out of them, because that's all I could figure. If she was still alive I would think she would say or do something instead of simply not do anything but ring the doorbell before all of the goodbye stuff is going on. I have to watch the video again, because it looks like her father is in the house, well heck, maybe it's the boyfriend???lol!

Re: What's Changed?
I don't know, the video says something different than the lyrics. The video must be the dad, because the same man is with her boy, and is running with her when she was a little girl. The beginning of the video doesn't make much sense, because it is clearly the boyfriend and not the father listening to "someone" drive up. The father has to be alive because the lyrics say something about a wedding with her daddy by her side and violins would play here comes the bride, in other words he would walk her down the aisle. Nothing is said of her mother, so I presume she is dead, and that is probably the woman who embraces her after she rings the doorbell and no one answers??? They're both dead.

What happened was,the lyric appeared on another forum and I just glanced through them and it dawned on me that the situation had changed and there was no obvious explanation why.Len911 wrote:I just looked up the video on youtube. What made me particularly interested is that ML often enthuses about this song and says it's one of the best demo's he's ever heard,he has a copy in his office.
So I read the lyric and looked for the (what happened) and I couldn't find it.
It's no big deal really I was just curious.

Re: What's Changed?
"I can hear her say I love you like it was yesterday
And I can see it written on her face that she had never felt this way"
If it is true that the girlfriend and mother of the small child died, and it is told from the pov of the boyfriend, then the first line sounds plausible, but the second line doesn't. For some reason culturally we are allowed to use the imagery of hearing that is not actual, but the seeing can only be used without the eyeballs, lol! However, if he actually saw her, the first line doesn't make sense.
Okay, enough for now, I hate mysteries, tell me what your thoughts are. (through this whole process, my mouse was scrolling around erratically, making this whole exercise annoying, I replaced the batteries, and I somehow finally got it unstuck).
Oh, ok, I thought you were going to make a revelation or something! I suppose if the demo sounds great, who cares if the lyrics aren't
And I can see it written on her face that she had never felt this way"

Re: What's Changed?
Oh, I misread your post. I thought you had an epiphany regarding the meaning of the lyrics, and wanted to see if anyone else could figure it out, lol, and make sure you were correct, and what a clever lyric it was! Well actually I think I had a few questions in your inquiry and decided to read the lyrics and see what was going on and figure it out later, lol! And the lyrics just happened to be a little quirky.

Re: What's Changed?
Now I feel confused too. I love this song, but I thought it was the guy who died and she was coming back to an empty house.
The video is not real clear on this point, but I saw an interview of Rascal Flatts and they said they wanted a video for this song that was more than just a break up. So it was decided to let it go in another direction of the good-bye being actually due to a death.
Kind of a twist in the plot
