WIP - Blues/Rock nu/old...feedback welcome!

Post by ThirdStrand » Wed May 04, 2011 4:19 pm

Hey everybody - feedback welcome on this WIP for the telecom ad listing. It's a little outside for me stylistically, so I'm struggling on the finer points. Also, mix is currently more whacked out than a normal in-process, cause I'm on the road, and while I did think to bring my monitors, I also had the good plan of punching a hole in the middle of one of the bass drivers with a flying, just-unplugged quarter inch jack, so I'm doing the headphone/making guesses thing.

Called "Slipknot"

Thanks!

Matt

Matt

I like that sexy extra half beat in there. Got a lot going for it. Look forward to the next installment.

Cool Matt, I hear that Fame kinda groove in the keys. I'd say if you could get the drums to sound a little more live and raw it would help. The groove def has a bit of a R&b/funk thing happening as is that might not be "rock" enough for the listing. I guess Fame kinda has that but Black Keys are much more sort of garage blues, not as slick sounding. Might behoove you to listen to some Black Keys if you haven't already...

Good luck Matt!

Hey Matt,
I agree with Ethan, you've definitely got the Bowie vibe going on in this one. I think though that you may be on the opposite side of the spectrum as me. Whereas mine may be too gritty, yours may be a little too clean. Very nice playing and production, but I' getting a more contemporary jazz/blues thing going on rather than a neo/blues rock thing. But.....you never know exactly what the agency will ultimately like. So I say send them this, plus do a few different versions of it, taking it to the middle and to the opposite extreme.
best of luck,
Paul

Yeah, you dudes are right...I suck at the grit; sometimes I feel like I've got only butter in my fridge, which is kinda pretty but makes you feel sick after day two or three of the all-butter diet.

Check out "Slipknot (WIP2)" for an updated version...stripped it down, mono-ed and crushed the drums, went for a edgier lead, and a few other things...am I getting closer?

Thanks!

Yean Matt, this is sounding better, I'm diggin the organ and i think you could distort it a touch more even. The guitar is still sounding kinda slick and smooth, i hear something dirtier and sloppier if possible?

Nice work!

I'm with eeoo here--version 2 is better, but it could still be a little dirtier. The huge drums sound great in this version, though, and I'm digging the organ (which I would make a lot nastier, but maybe that's just me). And the extra eighth note is really killing me--in a good way. This is cool.

Thanks, everybody...WIP 3 and 4 now up on this one, integrating your suggestions on #3, and overdriving the drums on #4. Don't know if it'll ever have the right authentic feel, but it's definitely closer thanks to everybody's help! Now wondering if the tune is to jaunty to sit behind voiceover...hmm.

Thanks, everybody, for the thoughts...after finishing up a grittier mix of this one, I did a Bowie-esque retro-funk inspired mix just for the fun of it. Both are up now, Slipknot (Crushed Mix) and Slipknot (Fame Mix) in (I think) final versions...sweating the mix, since I'm still on the road with a blown monitor, and I'm running on phones, computer speakers, and a lot of guesswork.

Best to all...been really fun hearing everybody's excellent work today!
