Re: Help me define success
Matto,Well, that was certainly worth the wait. What a great deal of info you have shared. Thank you for taking your time to help educate me (and others). In fact, for all that work, I'll invite you to lunch or dinner when we meet (next Road Rally or before?). So please take me up on that! And congratulations on all your success. Love,Nomi

Re: Help me define success
HI all... some more infos ...if you are registered under the german GEMA (similar BMI/ASCAP etc.), you get actually € 5,03 ($ 6) per minute on radio broadcast.so you will received aprox. $20,00 for a 3:30 song ! It´s general payment and fixed by german laws.on top you will receive mechanical royalties also for the same rate, if you keep all rights for composing and lyrics.thats not very much !!! but you have to think about, that the syndicates of german radio broadcast mostly on more than 1200 connected radiostations simultaniously !in average you aired on 90 to 100 at the same time !for instance: ... if you get aired by POWER FM Radio (CAPITOL), europes biggest radio station, you goes on air for a couple of hundred times at the same time, and every single station counts !EUROPEWIDE !so you can get a fortune of bucks, if you aired by POWER Fm RADIO ... $ 1000s each and every single time !the secret is : ... "HOW TO GET ON POWER Fm !!!"the german "GEMA" pays twice a year ... in june and in december !!! okay .. doesn´t matter ... I can wait a few weeks, because I know, that Germans always paid correct and straight to the owner of the rights ...!one note: ... please dont submit COUNTRY or FOLK !!! ... Power Fm won´t broadcast it !!!that´s for sure !!!and ... you need a german publisher or label ... or both of it, who has direct access to the key-people !but they have always an ear for good recorded stuff from unsigned newcomers ! oh yeah ... and you need great songs .... no crap allowed !!!if you look very sexy ... one more advantage ... they will invite you to one of their open-air parties anywhere, where is a party on.if you dont look very sexy ... you have two options.1.) find somebody who looks very sexy, who has excelent singing thrills and is able to perform your music live !!!or .... 2.)... forget it !!!TRY IT OUT !!!tom

"you need a German publisher or label ... or both of it, who has direct access to the key-people"hmmm.... isn't that kinda like everywhere else --- you need a publisher or label to get on commercial radio?but all that is changing... net radio and podcasts will be paying royalties in the next couple of years... and good music from unsexy unknowns will get played cause people are tired of crass commercialism in music. I have to say that 90% of my listening is now INDIE music from around the world. And I dig it.H

Re: Help me define success
Quote:Some real life examples: Bernie Mac Show BG (background) use $675, Judging Amy BG use $1950, Law and Order SVU BG use $550, Dateline NBC PF (partial feature) use $0, Cooler Climate (Showtime movie) FF (full feature, a song) $1400. As you can see there's no rhyme and reason for the amount of the fee. I have even had songs placed on the same tv show by different MLP's and the fees have varied widely...From some of the discussions in other threads, I get the idea that some musicians would have considered the Dateline deal to be a "ripoff", etc. A good example, in my opinion, that deals are wide and varied and that even bigger name companies/productions don't offer you the sun and the moon. A longer, more patient view would reveal that a Dateline credit is excellent currency for future projects. Even if there were no royalties it would be well worth burning the song to a CD and spending the postage to mail it in.Thankfully, not everyone thinks that way and that leaves more deals for those of us who do. Re: Help me define success
Matto, Thank you very much for all of your knowledge....just curious, you said you were affiliated with BMI...are you a writer or do you work for a publishing company. When you were telling a couple of your success stories, I wasn't sure if these were songs you wrote or placed. Could you give me your opinion on who you think is the best publishing company when you find some time? Thanks...I've learned SO much reading all of your posts!Jasonwww.jasontreuman.com

They were placed by a number of different publishers. I have a fairly large catalog of songs, and different songs are represented by different publishers. There is no such thing as "the best publishing company". There are thousands of publishers, from small one man operations that concentrate on a small market niche to huge multinational conglomerates. And even if there were a "best" one, you and I wouldn't have a chance to sign with them since they would be busy representing all the biggest artists and writers. The key is to find publishers that can work well for YOU and help you achieve the goals you have set for yourself.matto
