Confused by Jeff Beck type instrumentals ...

Post by bobmelanson » Thu Jun 02, 2011 7:23 pm

New Listing ROCK/SMOOTH JAZZ TYPE INSTRUMENTALS in the style of Jeff Beck, etc., needed by a Publishing Company supplying tunes to an accomplished Electric Violinist for use on his next album. He will be performing soon on MANY popular day-time talk shows and, if selected, your track could definitely be featured! Instrumentals with a memorable melody and chorus hook, as well as a solid structure are essential. Tracks submitted should have enough breathing room for this brilliant Rock/Blues/Jazz Violinist to solo over, so that he can really shine! Instrumental performances must be solid! We recently ran this as Dispatch listing #D110418RJ and the company wants to hear more ASAP, so if you submitted to the referenced listing, please send in new material this time around. Please submit one to three instrumentals online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received no later than Wednesday, June 8, 2011. TAXI #Y110608JZ

It's definitely backing tracks, but if it's jeff beck style shouldn't there be some lead guitar in there too?

I would think if one wanted to nail this listing, they would make a cool guitar melody in the style of Jeff Beck and then step out of the way and give the soloist the lead spots.

imagine if John Williams and Trent Reznor met at Bernard Hermann's for lunch and Brian Eno was the head chef!

Hi; I got two forwards on the first listing like this. You can hear the songs on my Taxi site: Time Bomb & Soulful Slumber.
Both my songs feature some great guitar work by Chris Cain. That's probably the only thing that's similar to Jeff Beck, who I consider rock-fusion.
Watching Michael now talking about reading the listings, this one makes no sense because Jeff Beck is not even close to smooth jazz. It does say ROCK/SMOOTH JAZZ TYPE INSTRUMENTALS which I don't get either because smooth jazz is not rock.
Also, my tracks are complete productions with all the solos so I don't think they are looking in particular for backing tracks. What I got from the listing was that they were looking for SONGS for this artist and were gonna record the song with the artist.
If you listen to my tracks, one is an uptempo funk thing a la Sanborn/Marcus and the other is bluesy ballad. But both feature some burnin' guitar. (the trumpet player's ok too ;) )

Listening now Eric ... Great guitar and trumpet!

I submitted a track as mix -lead ... It's more fusion than jazz, but It was something I wrote a long time ago and my only real loss will be the $5 ...

It's called "The Rest Is History" on my page ...

.......snip..........
I was triggered by seeing Chris Cain mentioned. I love his guitar playing! Listening to 'Time Bomb'. It all sounds great with great playing.!!!

Back to the listing:

I agree that Jeff Beck is not a typical Smooth Jazz artist, so it contributes to uncertainty as to what is wanted. However I can see some of his work may be labelled Smooth Jazz. For example the track 'Serene' on his latest album. Beck has also made songs similar to that occasionally over a timespan of several decades.

With the description in the listing, it seems the process could be more efficient if we knew who the violinist was that we are writing for? It's not a big deal if you just submit something you have laying around though
