Overwriting an MP3 - which one does the screener hear?

Post by mrowberry » Mon Jul 04, 2011 7:55 am

Hi,

If I have submitted to a listing, but then alter something in a track once I have submitted.

If I overwrite the MP3 with a new one which one will the screener hear? The original one I submitted or the new one I have uploaded over it. I'm hoping it's the later of the two!

Thanks,

The last one you uploaded before the screener actually did the review is the one that will be heard. Once a listing closes, you don't know when the actual screening was done because screening could be done over a period of days or weeks but the results are all sent out at once.

If you re-upload before deadline, the new one definitely will be 'the one' since screening doesn't start until the listing closes. After deadline, the closer to listing deadline that your re-upload was, the better chance it will be the one reviewed. Within a day or two of closing, chances are pretty good, but no guarantees.

Casey

I called TAXI with the same Q last week.

TYPICALLY the screening starts w/in 12 hours of listing being closed so once your song is in the batch, that's the one they hear.

Don't forget too, that once you submit the songs it is possible that the screener with start screening before the listing closes. Because once you submit, you can not withdraw the tunes. Especially if there are a whole bunch of tunes being submitted.

As has been said. if the new updated tune is uploaded and the screener has not gotten to your submission, they will hear the new one, but you can never count on that being the case.

My understanding is screening never starts before the listing closes.

But yes, once the listing closes, the screener may or may not hear your more recent upload depending on timing.

I'm bumping this topic.

It popped up when I was doing a forum search to see if anyone knew for sure that the screeners NEVER screen before deadline or...?

It seems to me this issue was touched on in the "welcome" packet, but I've misplaced mine. And it also seems that the info is somewhere on the TAXI site in the "proper submissions" proceedures, but now I'm having trouble finding THAT.

Do we know the answer to this for sure? Or should we pop this question up on the general hangout?

I thought I heard Michael say one time on one of the TV shows that if they have a popular listing where hundreds if not thousands of songs are submitted, they will start screening as soon as they know they have a ton of songs to go though in order to give every song a fair listen and also to meet the most critical deadline.

I might be wrong, but that's what I though I heard ML say....I'm not about to listen to all the shows to find that one statement.

EDIT: I emailed them for a definitive answer.... we'll see what they say and I'll report back here when they answer.

Here's the official word from TAXI:

Hi Herb,

Thanks for the email. We will start screening submissions before the
deadline date in the event that we receive more submissions than expected,
or have a very short turn-around time.

Please feel free to contact me if you need any additional info.

Thanks,

I am quite disappointed to hear that. It is probably ok to forward before the deadline ends but to be rejected before the deadline seems harsh - especially for short turnaround listings. A few weeks ago I missed a deadline for dispatch submission by two minutes because a mix was not quite ready. Since then I have submitted early on most occasions, even if the track is unfinished and then continued to mix until the deadline - sometimes after - uploading progressively better versions. A gamble I know - but better than missing a deadline. If I thought that my submission might be rejected before the deadline then I guess I will have to wait from now on until the last minute to submit. At least then I know it is at least in a queue and I have a higher chance of maybe getting a better mix in if I need to.

I know TAXI has its deadlines too .. but it chooses the time for the end of submissions. We are paying for our track to be listened to .. and there is a published time until which we are led to believe that we can do so.
