I dodged a bullet with the lion thing, I just got a macbook pro and it shipped with snow leopard, phew! Sorry for the hassle, I've had nothing but smooth sailing with my imac. I'm imagine the compatibility issues will get ironed out relatively soon, don't you think?

I'm using one of those USB hubs that's built into my desk with 3 external drives and one piano/keyboard, I could probably get by with just one but I'll need to do some house keeping, I'll have to experiment and see if just having one plugged in is any faster. I'm sure every company has these compatibility issues at the top of their list, or at least I hope! I thought about contacting apple and seeing about downgrading to SL, how much is SL anyways? I know to upgrade to LION is only $29, maybe that's why it doesn't work very well ;) Oh and I still haven't even hooked up my audio interface because my cable is Firewire 400 and needs to be 800, so I'm waiting for the adapter to arrive this Tuesday.

FYI, a cable adapter will not convert FW 400 to FW 800, it just lets you pass signals at the lower speed. (which may be perfectly fine for your intended application, heh) :D

I'm sure Apple informs the developers, to not do that would be shooting themselves in the foot since Apple aren't the only ones by far that write software for the Mac. But I would imagine that some developers have more resources than others to update software to accommodate OS changes, so there will be some time lag expected. I would imagine it's much the same in the Windows world, in fact, I've experienced it as well there. Vienna Ensemble Pro worked fantastic in Windows 7 until I loaded up East West Play. East West finally figured it out but it took some time. Such is life in the world of computers.

Hey Marc, sorry to hear of your troubles! It will all work out in the long run, might still be a good move after all the dust settles?
Hope for the best man!

Well, I guess my answer is "not to Mac", after spending a few days with it trying to get things to work I decided to send it back. On a positive note Apple took it back hassle free, I was a little worried because it was customized but they were easy to work with.

So I got in touch with Len911 and he helped me spec out a really nice PC from Newegg that I'll be putting together this weekend. I want to thank him for taking time to help me out with my questions, he's very knowledgeable with computers and really made this easy for me so thanks again Len!

Sorry to hear that Marc, I know you were excited.

I heard that Apple was offering refunds on FCP X so today I jumped in the long line of editors asking for my money back. If you guys didn't see the Apple/FCPX spoof on Conan check it out (it's already vanished from a lot of sites) . . . you know you've goofed when the late night comics come after you!

Sorry to hear about your tribulations!

Well, sometimes switching platforms can be traumatic, it has taken me many years to make peace with Windows and at work they are finally switching to Windows 7, but they offer Macs as well along with parallels (so you can run Windows at the same time on the same machine) and I am seeing many people jumping ship and requesting Mac laptops instead of the HP Windows 7 ones they are offering. I may just ditch Windows again (when I got here the whole company was on macs!) for my work machine since I can run all my work apps for Windows better than the HP laptops do, and get all the benefits of Mac as well.

In the end it's what you're used to and what you can make work. I've been a Mac guy since I sold my Commodore 64 and haven't looked back since, so I am naturally biased, but I'm glad you are getting a good machine that will hopefully work for you. Good luck!

I hear ya, it obviously would be a different story if I had a history with Mac, it's uncharted territory for me that was a big part my decision. I really had nothing against Windows in the first place, I guess i just thought I was missing out on something great, the grass is always greener sort of thing, but in the end like you said it's what you're used to and can make work. I'm excited to be moving forward with a new custom PC but I have to say I already miss the big ass monitor, awesome magic mouse and keyboard :)

Marc, I think it's a little premature to say how expert I am on computers, lol! You just happened to catch me at a time I was doing a little research for what computer I might need if I decide to delve into a little 3d animation.

I would probably choose a mac laptop over an HP. I don't think there's much of a market for assemble-your-own laptops, so you're pretty much stuck with the whole package. Also the 8 and 12 core mac pros would be nice for any graphics intensive related stuff that would use all the cores. But I think for the desktop/workstation applications that you can assemble yourself, you just can't beat the performance/price ratio.
