Educational materials are tools to help you make the best of the other tools you have, and I've spent the summer reading Mike Senior's book Mixing Secrets http://www.amazon.com/Mixing-Secrets-sm ... 687&sr=1-1 .

If you don't know, Senior is doing the Mix Rescue section in the magazine Sound On Sound http://www.soundonsound.com/ , which I find very educational.

I've learned previously hard to grasp topics like sidechaining compressors and gates, ducking reverbs and delays, how to choose plug-ins dependant on your purpose, which are the most important parameters to tweak ect. ect. Lots of instantly applicable hands-on information, not found in any other book to my knowledge!

Mixing Secrets operates from the premise that you are mixing in the box, and provides you with a deep understanding of how to achieve professional sounding mixes as well as a bunch of cool expert tricks, in an entertaining, easy to understand lingua..

Seems he also engages in studio work, and that you can even work along side of him on your tracks! Check out his website (he also offers an excellent list of freeware plug-ins!) http://www.cambridge-mt.com/MikeSenior.htm .

Just saying, that I've learned tons from my Mike Senior summer study, and this really works for me. Highly recommended to spend some time with, IMO!

That looks like a great book. Reading through the Amazon blurb, those mythbusters he shares are aleady attention-grabbing. Think I'll need to get this. It'll be my first ever music-production book purchase. Thanks!

One of two magazines I still subscribe to, SOS and TapeOp. I have always enjoyed Mike's articles in SOS and when I saw the book ad, I purchased it straight away.

Been working my way through it this summer as well. Chocked full of great advice and info. I think it strikes a very nice balance between being overly simple for beginners and yet providing good tips and info for more experienced people.

Plus, the book includes a number of download files that help you get the lessons.

Yep, SOS and TapeOp are the best! Thanks for the headsup on Senior's book, Magne. You mentioned a list of recommended free plugins, I didn't see that in your links?
