I didn't catch the show yet.

Many pieces of music are good but not contemporary. They just need to be paired up with the right opportunity/listing.

This piece has some good stuff going on. One thing is the drum rhythm is a little unsettling early on. Also, don't forget that the no-vocal version, either whole or shorter could be marketable. Simple acoustic, some drums, and harmonica works well in lots of situations.

Again, I didn't catch the show and even if the reaction was a bit harsh, that reaction might be what you'd get from an industry pro *IF* you submitted for something that was supposed to sound contemporary.

60’s DRUG INFLUENCED SONGS needed by a busy TV Music Supervisor for a scene where two stoners are in a van and music is playing out of the radio. He uses druggie/stoner songs very frequently and is trying to build a stash for upcoming shows, mostly on MTV and VH1. Your songs need to sound very “stoned”. MALE or FEMALE VOCALS OKAY. Broadcast Quality needed (great sounding home recordings are okay). Your submissions cannot be signed to any Libraries, not even Non-exclusive libraries-they must be totally "free and clear," meaning that you must own or control 100% of the copyright and master. If your songs are used, they will go DIRECT to the Music Supervisor and you will keep 100% of the income. If the Music Supervisor is interested in your song(s), he will contact you directly! Please submit one to three songs online or via CD, include lyrics. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by a TAXI screener (after smoking a few doobies) and must be received no later than Friday, September 23, 2011.

How cool is that !!! I am a fan of Michael , for Taxi and that he has worked with Neil Young, this is just a buzzing bio part to use, if I could use it.

From my point of view 'contemporary' is all about the mix and the arrangement and choice of instruments. A good song is a good song no matter what era it comes from. I mean, from a lyrical point of view the same subjects come up in songs decade after decade after decade. The key is to put a new spin on a topic I guess and the same could be said for the arrangement, instrumentation etc. Mumfords sound contemporary because of the production. The songs, the vocals, the instruments are nothing new. In my opinion (I always feel I have to add that!)

Not at all Mark, I can't deny I felt a punch and had to do some thinking after the show, I think it has sparked some great thoughts from you Paul and Casey here, I certainly feel tons warm and appreciate what is being said!

Edit: thanks Mark, yeah, The contemporary thoughts are top, mixing/production the key then maybe, or like you say, a great song shines through it all is poss "it". Proper cool this thread to turn into some learning.

I was quite interested too in what Michael was saying about what he referred to as the 'trailer park libraries.' I have songs in all kinds of libraries from some quite big, high-end ones to a couple of what I guess you could call 'trailer park' ones. If the bigger guns don't accept a tune then I fire it out to them. So far the 'trailer park' ones have netted me more usage than the bigger ones. I don't necessarily think these ones work against Taxi. There are all kinds of different uses for music and all kinds of levels. Although it would be great to only get high-end usage out of my music I will happily take a 'lower' end usage too. As long as a tune gets used and I get paid for it then I'm happy! (Well, as long as it's not being licenced by some far-right religious. Heh heh.)
