There will be NORMAL people at a musician's convention? :o :? :| Maybe they can wear special color badges so we can pick those rare folks out from the other thousands of attendees!

Q: Do you know the difference between a guitarist and a pizza?

A: A pizza can feed a family of four.

But try not to gawk. We want to welcome normal people too. Interesting or boring, it's all grist for the song mill.

Hey... I have a question. I see from the Rally itinerary that there'll be 2 open mic's. Does that mean there'll be any back-line (drums, amps, keyboards, etc.) set up? I'm not bringing my guitar (because Southwest won't let me bring it on board unless I buy a seat for my guitar!), so I was wondering if the musicians will have a chance to jam as well... It would be nice to see that Guitar Center or someone else provided the back-line...
Andy, I help run one of the open mics. Bose provides the sound system, and we supply D.I.'s, mics and stands. The Bose serve as both monitors and P.A., as they sit behind the performers. A keyboard and guitar are usually available on stage.

BTW I fly Southwest from Denver, and have never had a problem bringing my guitar on board (without buying a seat for it.) My Ovation acoustic fits in the overhead....a couple of times, the flight attendants felt it would take up too much overhead room, so they placed it in a closet near the front of the plane, and had it ready for me when I departed. Maybe they're stricter from other destinations....

The worst case scenario is they "gate check" it, where they tag it and place it on the plane in the same place where they put baby strollers, car seats etc. I've only had that happen once, and it was on United.

So my advice, if you want to bring your guitar, is bring it to the gate and let them help you out. But make sure you only have two carry-ons, and the guitar counts as one of them....;)

Cheers,
--Neil Z.

I hope Alaska Airlines will be as accommodating! Anyone have guitar experience with them?

I think I'm bringing a sax, but guitar is my main instrument. As for traveling with guitar, Soft case without problems. If you have a hard case they are more inclined to gate check it. Only had mine gate checked once, outta Nashville, and there were 7 other guitars on. (sw flight). Pilot brought them up personally. ( he was a guitarist himself. Gotta love Nashville)

I always recommend insurance on any nice guitars, but that's only because other things can happen. Airlines here and abroad have been very accomodating.

( now, can someone find the you tube link to .. " united breaks guitars?" )
