Surf return

Post by Mark Crozer » Thu Oct 20, 2011 4:49 pm

Hmm... I know I always say I'm a bit perplexed but this time I really am a bit perplexed...

My tune Ratbag was returned for the recent Surf listing (Dick Dale, Ventures etc) with the 'recording' box ticked... I genuinely can't see what's wrong it. I've had so many great, positive comments saying that this tune sounds like a genuine recording from the 60s too. The tune is already signed to a music library anyway (who themselves said that it sounded totally authentic) so I'm not that gutted... It's just a bit of an oddity to me that's all... especially as the screener was the same one who only last week said how much they loved my work and couldn't wait to hear more. Pretty funny really. They're obviously hearing something I'm not hearing...

Oh well.

Mark

Having re-listened the mastering is a bit woolly on this track... Then it's a fair enough return I guess.

Mark, I don't know, there seem to be a few somewhat-puzzling returns on this listing. The only thing I can think--listening to the tracks that were forwarded--is that they were really looking for dripping-wet sounds and hard, tremolo-picked guitar.

I got a surprise forward (I really don't think my track competes with even some of the returns), but I produced it as if it were a track I found on somebody's old reel-to-reel at a garage sale. It's dirty, it's messy, the drums are buried, and, most of all, it's awash in reverb, top to bottom.

Your track is much cleaner overall, with the exception of the semi-laconic lead guitar, which is sort of obscured by the (relatively-more) pristine drums up front.

Who knows, though!

Hey Man I got a return on a surf song as well. It really bruised by ego because I grew up playing this music. I had a Ventures model Moserite! After hearing the forwards, I belive the posting should have said they wanted uptempo driving surf music. That is mostly what I heard when listening to what was forwarded. I also think from the brief comment my reviewer made about production (although if he reads this I may be wrong) he had not really lived with a lot of authentic surf stuff. I might I also say the stuff I heard that went through was all pretty strong, but I thought your tune was inside the pipeline.
