Creative FX? Try Twisted Tools Reaktor ensembles

Post by Cruciform » Tue Oct 18, 2011 8:33 pm

So this company create ensembles for NI's Reaktor.

I picked up Scapes and am already using it. It's extremely impressive, musical and has obvious sound design usefulness.

Here's a quick demo with it.

First hit is from Heavyocity Evolve, then reversed and run through a patch. At 18.5s is a simple two-note sound taken from SL's "Cinematic Guitars", followed by the sound run through the same patch. Nothing fancy, and I'm still only playing with presets but it contains very nice ideas and sound quality.

Rob.

Edit: and I'm now currently downloading their Rolodecks Pro effect. :)

I just had a little spending spree on three of these plugs thanks to your 'tip'! Thanks a lot! *grumbles*

Sarcasm aside, these things are super handy and tweakable. I haven't had much time to play with them but are these good to use as insert FX or am I missing something? Every time I instantiate one on a track it just plays whatever it wants.

Maybe I should RTFM.

You need to add Reaktor as an effect (insert or send, whatever you want). Then load the ensemble. (You're probably already doing that).

Scroll right down to the bottom of the ensemble GUI. There is an option to switch between an internal sample which is preloaded or an external audio feed. To apply it to your sounds, you need the external input. I also found that needs to be switched over every time I open the project again. Can probably save it as a snapshot to avoid that.

And yes, they're very useful! I just finished up a percussion album and used them on maybe a third of the tracks or more. Can't wait to try them out on a full sized piece! So far, I've just got Rolodecks Pro and Scapes. In the little I've played with them, they're brilliant for sound design.

I'm also going to collect a few Audio Damage effects. I've got Replicant. Some of the others sound excellent too. I can already hear you muttering at me Image........

Of course, as soon as I replied I found the little live/external feed buttons.

Dude, these things are SICK. I used iZotopes stutter Edit and thought it was decent, but these bad boys are 3 plugs (scapes, buffeater, and rolodecks) for less than the cost of iZotopes one plug. Plus, they are Reaktor ensembles and I love that I am actually using Reaktor now and can look under the hood at their DSP programming techniques. /end_nerdrant

A tip for those with Cubase. Load the ensemble as an insert effect on your desired track, and then to fully use the plugs you need to create a MIDI track and assign the MIDI tracks output to the Reaktor MIDI input. Press play to get audio feeding through the plugin and then play your MIDI keyboard (with the MIDI track selected, of course) and you can get some slick sound design happening.

Love to hear some of your pecussion tracks you've used with this thing. Thanks again!

Ugh, jerk! I had BigSeq on one of my old computers and have been trying to remember the name to get it on my new machine. Thanks!

How do you like Replicant? Looks really interesting. I love all these plugs devoted to electronic/IDMish music creation

Twisted tools are offering $11 off total order cost this weekend. Discount code is 111111.

Dave,

I was actually looking for a substitute for Stutter Edit because I thought it was overpriced and that's how I found these. As for Replicant, I haven't been overwhelmed by it, but to be fair, I haven't taken the time yet to really dig in. I think it could be great if I learn to use it well. But I have liked using it in series with Rolodecks (before and/or after), can get some really interesting mashups going on.
