Returned listing Y111114DA Need clarification

Post by Kevm » Fri Nov 18, 2011 6:46 pm

Ok, so I'm not quite sure but when under Not Master/Broadcast Quality where the recording box is checked on a returned listing, what exactly does this mean?

Because I did this song with a pretty big named producer in his studio with top notch gear, it is most definitely Master/Broadcast quality. You can listen to the track on my taxi page, it's http://www.taxi.com/kevinmoormann and the song is Firefly.

Now I understand what they wrote in the comments section I guess (although I'm not quite sure how the chorus is at all dark..)

This is what they said: "The listing says it doesn't want anything too dark, and this song has a moody, dark dance/rock feel to it that is a bit more intense than what this listing seeks."

But the recording AND music box checked makes absolutely no sense to me, if anyone has any insight that'd be great.

Here is the listing:

Y111114DA

Music Supervisor working on a HOLLYWOOD FEATURE FILM needs Fun, Up-tempo ELECTRO-DANCE/POP SONGS a la "Ooh La La" by Goldfrapp: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uco-2V4ytYQ and "Alala" by CSS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cnOvMFnRvsQuoting them: "Nothing too dark, please. Keep it on the fun (but not silly or too over the top) side of things. This is for a scene where a boring, conservative girl wants to break out of her shell and become more fun and less boring." Can you blame her? Nobody wants to be boring! Lyrics that reflect that "I'm breaking out of my shell" theme are recommended, but if they're TOO "on the nose," that COULD work against you. As always, DO NOT copy or rip-off the referenced artist's songs in any way, shape, or form. Use them only as a guide for style, vibe, texture, and feel! This listing is going through a VERY well connected Film/TV Licensing AGENT. IN THE EVENT OF PLACEMENT, A COMMISSION OF 20% WILL BE DEDUCTED FROM THE OVERALL FEE by the agent. The agent will NOT participate in any ownership of either the publishing or the master. Broadcast Quality is needed for this pitch (EXCELLENT home recordings are fine). Vocal performances need to be top notch! Your submissions CANNOT be signed to any Libraries, not even Non-exclusive libraries -- they must be totally "free and clear," meaning that you must own or control 100% of the copyright and master. Please submit one to three songs online or via CD, INCLUDE LYRICS. ALL SUBMISSIONS will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS, so NO FULL CRITIQUES on this listing. THE AGENT WILL CONTACT YOU DIRECTLY IF INTERESTED. All submissions must be received no later than 12 noon (PST) Monday, November 14th 2011. TAXI # Y111114DA

I know the distorted vocals were meant to be that way, but it sounded to me to be more NIN than electro-pop. So that's my guess as to why the recording and music boxes were checked. Those boxes aren't necessarily about the recording as it stands alone as much as how the recording pertains to what's asked for in the listing. Gear doesn't matter. If you record a country song in the best studio in the world and submit it to a metal listing, those boxes will still be checked, I believe. Cool song though, just needs the right listing. HTH

I find that the "Recording" box is not used solely to indicate whether the production and engineering is broadcast quality in the general sense. It also overlaps with how the recording fits for the PARTICULAR LISTING. So, for example, if a booming dance song is requested and your bass is low, it might be broadcast quality for other things but the recording doesn't work for that listing (That's just an example of a scenario).

Yes, it's confusing at times.

Since you had comments explaining the reason for return, I'd pay much more attention to that than the check boxes.
"The listing says it doesn't want anything too dark, and this song has a moody, dark dance/rock feel to it that is a bit more intense than what this listing seeks."
That's what you should take away from this.

Best,
