Event's relatively new Opal is at the top of my wishlist; dig the review in the latest issue of TapeOp: http://www.tapeop.com/reviews/887/ Count me among the 'two ears, two speakers' set; Sub/satellite systems nearly always involve some compromises in terms of subwoofer placement and crossover adjustment, and simply having three sound sources can introduce complex phase issues that are entirely avoidable by simply using a two-point two-way rig with woofers of sufficient size.

The Opals are very interesting to me too, I'd love to hear them. I read the review, it was very favorable! Hopefully for my next studio upgrade, spending 3K for a pair of speakers will be "in the budget"!!

Yeah, current budget doesn't stretch that far; i'll be poppin' for a pair of Mackie MR8s, this go-round.

Hey mojo :
Did Mackie ditch the passive radiator's on the MR series ? If they did, I might be looking at these myself.

I couldn't get used to the original Mackie HR8's with the passive low-freq radiator. Practically any bass instrument sounded like a poorly defined, wooly, tubby, fingered bass with dead strings. Even synth basses lacked definition. Yeah, sure it had tons of bottom and sounded great cranked, but....anyway, the HR8's were not for me. :(

Yep, they ditched the passive radiator for the MR series; they have a large port in the rear, which might make placement a tad trickier, depending on your setup.
