LOVE Sennheiser mics. I use the e609 for guitar. Might be good for percussion as well. High SPL, so maybe not best for congas.
I have an 835 for vocals that I got for free that works very well on vox and instruments.

+2 or 3 on Sennheiser 421, an all around workhorse mic. Great on toms and kick, too.

How about the 441... More tonal versatility, just a great dynamic mic. Flatter than a 421, which has a presence peak.... The EV RE-20 is also a classic mic, but big and heavy.

My 2+ cents,

Ern 8-) :)

There are finer mics of course ,but a well placed Shure sm57 has always worked fab for me ...from snare and toms to assorted dollar store kiddie percussion instruments!

While this linked article deals with recording latin percussion, perhaps the info could be applied to live situations.
