I posted this in Peer to peer as well with no feedback just yet. I am having trouble classifying my music. Its hard to pitch to listings when every screener classifies my music with a different genre. I've been told "singer/songwriter, Folk, Americana, Jam band rock", among others. Not sure what I am at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
you can hear my tracks at mikeshrout.bandcamp.com and also www.reverbnation.com/mikeshrout . Not sure how to link my taxi page on here. Sorry, sort of computer illiterate when it comes to this stuff.

Re: New Tunes but am having trouble classifying!!!
Most writers have songs that could be classified in a number of ways; it's not a big ol' huge hairy deal, until you have to target listings or describe what you do to others, both of which are more important to the marketing than the music; who knows if Owl City fans might also like your stuff? I'd say you're probably Americana and singer-songwriter; one's a kind of catch-all term for acoustic or roots-oriented non-mainstream music; the other just means you're self-contained. If I had only listened to one of your songs, and it sounded vaguely reminiscent of Dave Mathews, I might have said jam band, but I won't.

Thanks Mojo... Still makes it hard when a screener says, "Great song but this is more americana/Folk". Then you pith the song or songs to listings of that genre and they say "This is more singer/songwriter" etc. Maybe one day I will be clear on my style. Thanks for listening...mojobone wrote:Most writers have songs that could be classified in a number of ways; it's not a big ol' huge hairy deal, until you have to target listings or describe what you do to others, both of which are more important to the marketing than the music; who knows if Owl City fans might also like your stuff? Sometimes, not often, a reviewer is just reaching for an excuse to pass; it might have been more helpful to note that your guitar is out of tune on most of the tracks.

IS it??? Hmmm? I tune a half step down most of the time. Never have been a fan of standard tuning. But thanks for your input...
