Forward on Y120312MB, ballads for South Korean male artist

Post by rickpaul » Wed Mar 28, 2012 2:21 pm

I just got a forward for "I Didn't Think" on listing Y120312MB, which read:
BIG, SOARING BALLADS with MALE VOCALS in the style of Josh Groban to Celine Dion are needed by a successful South Korean Music Publisher working with a very popular South Korean male vocalist. HE SAID: "Ballads in the range of Josh Groban and Celine Dion are a good starting point for the one, but I'm also open to mild ballad Acoustic Pop, like John Mayer's 'All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye,' which could work as well." MALE vocals ONLY please! This company wants to hear A LOT of material and we'd like to give it to them, so be sure your LYRICS are VIVID and WELL-CRAFTED and your MELODIES are EMOTIONALLY POWERFUL and MEMORABLE. They pay approx. $2,000 when a song is placed with a label and performance royalties are split between the publisher, lyric writer, and you. In this market, according to the company, "typically a song will earn $10,000 in royalties if it's a filler track. If it's a hit, expect $50,000 to $100,000." NO profanity and NO third-party samples! Instrumental and vocal performances must be top-notch!
I'd also submitted "Fly" and "Waiting for You" for the same listing, but those were returned, with "Music" checked as the reason (it was a yes/no listing, and no other comments were made). Perhaps interestingly, the one that was forwarded was only a piano/vocal demo, while the others were full productions. Perhaps the more vanilla arrangement helped?

This is my fifth forward overall in the just shy of a year I've been a TAXI member, but it is my first forward for a "raw song" listing (i.e. pitching the song for another artist, as opposed to pitching a master and song for sync uses or, in one of the other four forwards, pitching myself as a singer-songwriter for a live opportunity).

Congrats! I listened to all three. Good songs. "I Didn't Think" sounds like it has more potential for a dramatic build to the chorus. Maybe that's what they heard. It's always hard to tell! I hope it's a huge hit in Korea! Good luck. Ray

Thanks, Ray. There was a pop singer over in Mongolia, who'd had a radio and video hit with another of my songs, that recorded "I Didn't Think" some years ago. She messed up on some of the lyrics, and would have had to redo it before releasing it, then she ended up going another direction when she finally got around to releasing an EP anyway (only traditional Mongolian songs and her own originals), so even the song she'd made popular there didn't go on the EP. Anyway, the arrangement she had done for "I Didn't Think" did indeed have a dramatic build, complete with a guitar solo reminiscent of Steve Lukather. I was bummed she didn't put it out because, aside from the flub on the lyrics, she did a great job. Not contemporary for radio purposes, even at that time, but still the kind of thing that could have brought the house down in Vegas or elsewhere on the live front.
