Casey, I agree with most of your post, tho the idea that "the biggest country acts are ALL male" isn't a rule, it's simply an erroneous statement. Here:

18 out of 25 isn't "all". Not even close. Reba's No. 3
Cheers!

I wasn't referring to the statement about country stars being make when I said "rule". I'm completely ignoring that and focusing on Ralph Murphy's advice about who songs should appeal to-- that's what I meant with "rule"...shoodBworkin wrote:Casey, I agree with most of your post, tho the idea that "the biggest country acts are ALL male" isn't a rule, it's simply an erroneous statement. Until you check their sales figures. Go ahead, I'll wait.shoodBworkin wrote:Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Sugarland, before that Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Trisha Yearwood, Deana Carter, Jo Dee Messina, Reba, The Judds, Pam Tillis, Patty Loveless, Lorrie Morgan, before that Jeannie C. Riley, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Lynn Anderson, Patsy Cline, Kitty Wells . . . the biggest country stars aren't all male.

Taylor Swift's fans may be rabid, and smack in the middle of the record-buying demographic, but Kenny Chesney sells out stadiums while Taylor barely fills theaters in some areas, and Garth Brooks sold way more than Shania. The perception is that all or most artists that are well-known are on an equal footing, but the reality is something else. Speaking for myself, Emmylou is a way bigger deal than Taylor Swift, but I have a different frame of reference than Ralph Murphy, or really most country music fans, in general. Consider also that all but the first four ladies you mentioned (and to a lesser extent, Faith Hill) haven't charted anything in recent memory.
And I also completely agree with Casey's post.

Turns out the highest grossing tours of 2011 were
1)U2
2)Taylor Swift
3)Kenny Chesney
Here's the thing: Taylor Swift played 29 more gigs than did Chesney. Are those likely the smaller venues?

Maybe, but you'd probably want to factor in the opening acts, before deciding who's the bigger draw. To get us back on topic, you'd also have to factor in who paid for the tickets, and for a Taylor Swift ducat, I'm betting it was a thirty-something female, same as for Chesney. The point, here, is that women are the deciders; dad can listen to whatever he wants in his truck, but mom decides whose CDs are fit to buy and which concerts are fit for her impressionable daughters to attend. Come to that, my wife decides whether we see George Strait or Gary Allan, though truth be told, she likes me better than either of 'em, (so she tells me) and doesn't even come to my shows*, so.......?
* In all fairness, she's certainly seen plenty of me.
