Anyone up for a cowrite? Summery, upbeat pop/rock

Post by shanegrla » Thu Jul 12, 2012 5:57 pm

So here's the listing:

VP of A&R at a Major Label looking for SUMMERY, UPBEAT POP/ROCK SONGS with MALE VOCALS in the style the Poppier side of Sublime, with influences from Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, Bruno Mars, etc., for one of the artists on their label. QUOTING THE LABEL: "I'm looking for non-relationship songs. Some good references are "What It's Like" by Everlast, "I Just Want To Fly" by Sugar Ray." As always, do NOT copy or rip off the referenced tracks or songs in any way, shape, or form. They'll be looking for songs that have a SUMMER JAM quality that screams CURRENT RADIO! Songs submitted should have a STRONG melodic sensibility, CAREFREE and YOUTHFUL themes, and CLEVER lyric HOOKS that grab the listener's attention. MID-TEMPO ONLY for this pitch! MALE vocals ONLY! Instrumental demo presentation must be top-notch! Please submit one to three songs online or per CD, include lyrics. All submissions will be screened and critiqued by TAXI and must be received no later than Wednesday, July 25, 2012.
TAXI # S120725RK

So here's what I've got: I've got a song called "Basement Window" (on my Taxi page). I think the chorus melody and chord progression could pretty much fit this description pretty well. It's kinda major key, happy, upbeat and feels pretty summery to me. Problem is, the lyrics are a bit depressing (the whole song, not just the chorus). It's basically about life in a crappy small NYC apartment. (I've exaggerated the story for artistic license, but still it's not too far from that. 8-) )

So if anyone out there thinks they could replace those depressing lyrics with something summery and more happy but while keeping that melody, that would be awesome. (And obviously the title will have to change too.)

As for the verses, I'm not sure about that either. Both the music and melody may be a little too minor key and be too much of a contrast to the sunny chorus, so if you can come up with anything for that too, that would be great also.

I’m figuring on having to rerecord it anyway (or at the least, a pretty extensive remix), so you wouldn’t have to worry about demo’ing anything up, I’d be happy to do that. (Unless you’ve got a cooler voice than me, then that would be definitely ideal.)

If anybody is interested, hit me up and let’s see what we can do.

P.S. There’s another listing out there right now that’s pretty similar, not due till July 27th: “CONTEMPORARY MALE POP/ROCK SONGS "with a Reggae influence" in the style of The Script, Green Day, Sublime, etc.” (in the Pop category). We’d definitely be able to submit it to this one too.

Hi

Realise by the dates, that you won't be looking for anything for this submission now.
However I was wondering what the chances are of other opportunities arising in the future. As I would definately be interested in collaborating on something.
I'm a UK based lyricist and I'm always looking for outlets for my work, so if you're still looking then let me know.

Cheers
Roger

Hi Roger,
Definite possibility. I'm always running out of things to write about. As soon as something comes up, I'll let you know.

Thanks, Stuart. I actually went ahead and finished the song myself since the deadline had gotten too close by the time anyone had responded. The new version is called "Lazy Summer" (on my Taxi page).

I submitted it to the two listings I mentioned earlier. Haven't had any feedback yet though. Keepin' the fingers crossed.
