Metadata Tags

Post by SpudDavenport » Wed Jul 11, 2012 10:19 am

hello all. First time Poster here.
hey, Whenever I add Meta tags on my Mac, the info isn't there on a PC and vice versa...
is there a way to add Meta tags to AIFF & MP3 files that show on BOTH Apple products & PCs???
Muchas gracias,
spud

Hi Spud, What system are you using to enter your Metadata? I use to use iTunes when I was on a Mac and all the information appeared correctly when I transferred over to PC. I'm now using my DAW (Studio One) to enter the metadata tags.

I'm using Logic Pro 9, tagging after I master, when making the AIFF & MP3 files. damnedest thing.
Even my buddy who owns a Recording Studio here can't figure it out. He has the same prob w/ Logic 9.
I DID get the tags to "stick" working backwards and tagging on a PC, right mouse click, but heck, I shouldn't have to do that...
I believe I had tried iTunes and had the same prob, but I'll try again.
Thx, Gus

There's not really a standard way to store metadata in a wav or Aiff file.

For just about everything else I use this: http://www.jthink.net/jaikoz/

Most Windows software won't read metadata in an AIFF file, and most file converters of my acquaintance will likely ignore the metadata when swapping MSBs for LSBs, or vice-versa. I think the workaround is to output BWAV files in Logic. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb10/a ... p_0210.htm

Yeah... I read (somewhere) that you cannot embed metadata on standard WAV or AIFF (yet). MP3's are the only files capable of storing and displaying ID3 tags.
You can however embed (some) metadata into B-WAV's (or Broadcast-WAVE file) but then again... it's not standardized, so there's no guarantee it will work on other systems that are even capable of decoding a B-WAV file...

That's what I read... (somewhere)...

I can add metadata in cd's using wavelab, but Windows Media Player doesn't read it. I think you have to have a player that is able to read what is written, and there doesn't seem to be a standard or else there are different standards or protocols. I remember on one of the taxi tv episodes Michael couldn't believe that some pro cd's the metadata doesn't show, but I also remember reading something on the net that you have to register the metadata to be read.

Here is a good article explaining the metadata for cd's:

There isn't really any metadata beyond cd text, isrc's and timings that are stored on/in the physical cd's (TOC) table of contents.

It is more for the "Online" database ie: Gracenote iTunes cddb

Now I see why the Taxi Road Rallys and ASCAP Expos don't address this issue. Because it's so imperfect,
no one wants to touch the subject!
Michael L. talks about "meta tag everything"... yea, I agree. But if you tag an MP3 with an Apple product,
someone with a PC probably can't read the Contact info. And if the PC user likes the song, yer F'ed, unless
he's Columbo. :?

I really appreciate the feedback everybody and if anyone else has an idea or solution to this.... LET ME KNOW

Not quite; the info above applies to AIFF, WAV and BWAV files, not MP3s. Nearly all MP3 players and databases can read ID3 tags, regardless of the source machine. The exception is iTunes' default AAC format; some versions of Windows Media Player won't parse the metadata, nor even play AACs.
