One on One mentoring mistake. Take notice.

Post by Cat Herder » Mon Nov 05, 2012 7:55 pm

Every year I get at least one person who cannot show me their work because they bring an mp3 cd. We have to review then on inexpensive boom boxes that (at least in my experience) will not play mp3. If you have stood in line for hours to get your 1 on 1 mentor you can be very disappointed. We volunteer to be 1 on 1 mentors because we want to hear your work and offer you valuable advice, and sometimes find a keeper. So it can be as disappointing to us as well. See you all in a few days.

Funny, I was just compiling a bunch of my songs to put on CD and I made a point to make sure they were all the AIFF versions. But I didn't even think of that reason, I just wanted them to be the highest quality I could get them.

Thanks for the advice.

What Cat is saying though is make sure it's an AUDIO CD, not a data CD with music files. Yes, it should be burned from higher quality wav or aif files, but the key thing is that it is an audio CD-- the kind you stick in any player. Not all players play data CDs such as mp3 ones.

I think he was referring to a data cd, burned like a little hard drive with individual mp3 files copied over to it. Most little cd players have no idea what to do with that format. One *could* burn an audio cd using mp3 files as the source files but that obviously defeats the purpose of the higher quality cd audio.

Actually, while we're on the subject, here's a related question. Will it work to burn the songs on DVD-R? Or does it have to be a CDR? Because I'm having a hard time finding some printable CDRs around town (so I can print labels directly on the CDs with my printer). But Staples has some printable DVDs. Do you guys think those'll work OK?

what I gathered from the Rally last time is that....I'd stick with CDRs, because a lot of Discmans and little boomboxes that the mentors use only play CDs, the more advanced ones might play DVDs... but most of them don't. In addition, I don't think the mentors are concerned with the labels ( sharpie pen is fine, with name, email, ph#, track names)
Cheers!

Cat Herder that's a really great point because I had that very thing happen to me in one of the Breakout Classes last year.
Having your tune not play while everyone else in the class (and your best buddy sitting beside you) is anxiously to hear something was not a highlight of last year. Other than that loved the Rally.
I'm actually arriving tomorrow (Wednesday). Anyone else?

Yes, that is a good tip! I sent in a data CD to someone once and they could not play it so I was sure to make AUDIO CD this time around and I tested each one individually in an audio CD player, so I know they are good to go. :D

I am not 100% sure but if you are talking about Litescribe I did specifically get CDR. Staples, Office Depot, maybe Target?

Anyway, whatever you end up using just try it out in a regular CD player (the older the better) and if it works you should be good to go. :)
