Average number of song submissions?

Post by swhit » Thu Dec 06, 2012 7:25 am

Hi All,

Just wondering what the average number of song submissions for members are? Since October I have been submitting to about
two to three listings per month. Most of these songs have been written, recorded and mixed specifically for the
listing from the ground up. I know a lot is also based on how many listings suite your style or how much you are willing
to stretch yourself stylistically to submit to a particular listing but as a general ball park what is an average?
Am I being too lazy or overzealous?

Keep in mind I also have a family with young kids, a full time job and play part time in a band which practices once per week
and gigs about 1 to 2 times per month.

:?: :?: :?:

When I first started out I was submitting around 5-8 tracks per month - depending on the listings. That was about three years ago. Lately, I haven't been as active submitting as most of the stuff I am writing is going directly to the deals I have made via Taxi.

I think it varies depending on your situation, of course. When I first started, I was very interested in that same statistic and also in the return/forward ratio. But now I don't worry too much about it - I just try and do the best track I can for the listings that appeal to me and go from there. I think it is ok to ask/be curious what others are doing, but don't get too hung up on it - especially if it doesn't match what you are able to do.

We are all on different sections of the same path - some are able to move faster and some slower, but as long as you're moving forward, you're doing ok.

Cheers

Yeah, I don't think it's a numbers game. I think it's a combination of highest possible quality and understanding how TAXI works. Really good songs can be rejected just because they're wrong for that particular listing. So learning how to interpret the listings is a key to success here.

I recommend using the peer to peer to get feedback on your work and your listing interpretation. Particularly if you get a return you don't understand.

There's an amazing resource of talent and teachers here.

Hey Steve

I've been a Taxi member for 4 1/2 years now. There are months when I've submitted nothing and there are months where I've submitted a ton. I too have a full time job, 3 kids and my wife has MS so there are times when she just isn't able to help out with the kids or around to house. Its difficult to make time for the music sometimes (well, a lot of the time)

As Debra mentioned, I wouldn't get too focused on how many things your submitting. Now that I have signed deals with several libraries I know that when I'm producing a track the odds are very high that I will be able to find a home for it. Whether it gets forwarded for the Taxi listing or not. On the flip side, this year I had a few experiences where I was actually paid to compose some music for a project and then they decided not to use what I wrote. I still got paid and then I was able to put those tracks into a library.

The name of the game is producing the best stuff that you can for whatever you are writing for.

Whilst I think it's good to set realitic goals (produce 1 track a week, for instance), quality outweighs quantity in any formula you care to use. Experience, the requirements of the track, are going to come into play. There's no cookie cutter way to grow a track from the ground up, sequence and/or record all the instruments & percussion (+vocals), and then effectively mix it, all within the framework of listinng/opportunity requirements. Good work takes time. Better to have one awesome track a month to your credit than 4 that don't quite cut it. JMHO

Good point hummingbird!

I may be rushing some of them but sometimes the listing suits me 100% that
I can`t help but slap something together. Maybe I`m pressing too hard and
not thinking of quality verses quantity. Maybe after a year in I`ll have a good
repertoire of songs to pitch.
