A couple of things to remember about Tim Myers that may put his comments into perspective:

1- He was a member of OneRepublic before striking out on his own so he was not exctly a "nobody".
2- He exclusively releases his own artist projects, and although his claim to fame are his many many ad placements, these are a result of his pitching agency (Zync Music) placing his existing catalog...he never does deals where he would custom write a new song for a specific ad.

So he really comes from an independent recording artist background where he would naturally own all of his masters (which he records at his own home studio) and all of his publishing.

It's a completely different approach than someone who would do a work-for-hire writing for a specific commercial, so someone who would write for production music libraries which would then pitch and place their tracks.
