Instrumental vs Lyric songs

Post by NathanNasby » Tue Jan 29, 2013 5:50 pm

I did a few key word searches to try to find an answer to this but came up dry. So, forgive me if this has already made the rounds numerous times and been discussed at length :)!

I've started focusing more of my studio time in writing songs specifically for ops. I tend to write a lot more lyrical based songs than instrumentals, but I'm wondering if anyone here has gotten a feel for which ops are more common and which seem to have a higher success rate for them.

I know this is a bit generalized because one artist might have great success with a lyric as opposed to their instrumental, but actual success rate might have more to do with where their skill set rests. Then add the luck factor in there for fun!

If anyone has thoughts on this please share them. I'd love to get the feel from some of you artists who have been around here for a while.

Thanks!

I'm not sure if I understand your question...but if you are asking what gets used more, vocal songs or instrumental tracks, then the answer is instrumentals by FAR. There has been a trend in recent years to use more vocal songs as "background underscore", especially on certain network shows (the WB/CW was a pioneer in that), and of course in advertising, but despite this the balance is still very lopsided in favor of instrumental music.

That being said there are probably more opportunities now for placing vocal songs than there ever were, and if you also make an instrumental mix (which you should *always* do), then there's a chance those instrumental versions could get placed in their own right.

Thanks! Yes, that answers my question. It was a percentage question. Good to get some other opinions.
