advice on attending publishing/sync conference
Hey Guys!
canadian music week starts this week and I originally wanted to check out this synch summit where you're put in groups of 7 other artists/composers and you do round robins with a bunch of publishers and music supes.
it turns out the whole day (saturday) is about publishing/licensing so I decided to pick up the day pass as well!
Anybody have any advice on what preparations I could do, if any.
If anything, I was going to research all the panelists/supes/publishers in attendance just to get familiar with them and see if anybody might be a good fit for me.
Other than, I plan on getting as many business cards as possible for follow up.
Should I bother bringing any cd's? I know, maybe 3 tracks max, of my best stuff.
Anybody else here going?
Owen.

Advice: hand out USB drives.
I would get some inexpensive USB drives and load them up. One folder for songs, one folder for Bio, one folder for contact info, one folder with we links to more music.
You can get those drives with your name and email address engraved on them. Get bright colors too, as these will stand out. The drives should be secure since most computers scan the drives before opening up files.
You can still bring a few CDs, but those should only go to those that request a CD.
Good luck!

That's a cool idea. BUT - you should bring one copy of your music in CD form, in case they have a CD player and want to listen to your music right then and there as part of the Round Robin.DesireInspires wrote:Advice: hand out USB drives.
And make personal connections - ask them about their lives. Get interested and then make notes on their business cards, so that when you follow up, you can connect with them personally.

Thanks, you two.
I didn't think of the potential opportunity for demo's to be reviewed.
I'll definitely bring a few CD's.
The USB drive is an awesome idea! Not sure I'll have an opportunity to do it on such short notice but will keep that in mind for next time!

Hey guys!
My band had USB biz cards done up for CMW this year. If you've got a few weeks before the next event, try these out. I got these made up from a company called Flash Bay. We had them made with 2GBs. Enough for the new record, musics vids, bio and contact info. That event you're going to is pretty awesome, checked it out last year and learned a heap.
Sorry the photo is so large, couldn't re-size.
Best of luck at the conference!

Awesome! This would catch the attention of music supes more than a CD would. A shiny new package never hurts.

Re: advice on attending publishing/sync conference
Just wanted to share a quick recap of how the conference went.
The panels during the day were great. Most of the synch summit particpants were part of the panels so it was very cool to see what they're currently working on and get an idea of what they do.
The synch summit (table meetings) was fantastic, quick round robin meetings. We basically just introduce ourselves and the supes discuss what kind of stuff they usually use and what they're currently looking for. They all seemed very upfront, open, approachable etc. About half actually came with bags open asking for cd's and biz cards. I felt really excited to follow up with the ones that mentioned they work with hip hop.
Of about 12 people I emailed follow ups to, only 2 responded. I had set up a website and I have some tracking on it so I can get a sense of where the visits are coming from. 2 hits.
I know it may take a while for them to get through their daily barrage of emails, so I'll be patient and maybe send them some new material every couple weeks as they become available.
I just hope I can get through to a few of them that expressed genuine interest during the meetings.

Don't feel bad. I have talked to dozens of companies on the phone and have emailed hundreds of companies. Responses are always abysmally low. You are doing everything right.ochaim wrote:

Be consistent with whichever companies decide to work with you. Deliver on time and beg for more work.
