Synth Oohs & Ahhs OK on an Instrumental Listing?

Post by richmstudios » Sat Apr 20, 2013 8:40 am

I'm in the middle of working on a new track for the following instrumental TAXI listing:
NEW LISTING -- CONTEMPORARY DUBSTEP INSTRUMENTALS with creepy undertones in the style of "Kalawanji" by Kromestar, "Reptiles Theme" by Skrillex, "Geddeon" by Tunnidge, etc., are needed by the Music Supervisor of a popular TV show. Quoting the source: "We're looking for moody instrumentals that will add suspense, fear, anticipation, and dark vibes to different scenes." Tracks must be current and must be able to compete with some of the other top acts in the Dubstep genre. Your production must be up to date and wow your listener with the big Dubstep drop! INSTRUMENTALS ONLY, no vocals. You must own and control 100% of your master and composition rights. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received no later than Thursday, May 2, 2013.
TAXI # Y130502DS
I was wondering if any of you think that there would be an issue with having synth-generated sparse vocalization (e.g., an Omnisphere Choir Ooh or Ahh patch) in a track submitted to a TAXI instrumental listing that specifies "no vocals". I ask this because I notice that there is a female choral voice in the a-la reference track "Geddeon" by Tunnidge. I'd really like to use something a-la that effect but I don't want it to jeopardize getting a forward.

Your thoughts on this are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...

Tough call, Rich.

I've seen the TAXI listings say "oohs and ahhhs are ok" when they run an instrumental listing that says "no vocals." So the absence of the okay kinda tells me NOT to put them in... and just because they list an a-la with it in there doesn't make it ok, usually they are giving examples of the "vibe" mostly, followed by the instrumentation and/or vox. If you notice in that a-la, there are a lot of spoken lines. And I'm guessing they DON'T want that even though it is in the a-la reference.

All that being said, your best bet would be to check with Phil.

Although sometimes it's OK, if your track stands well on it's own without it, I'd play it safe. I've seen cases where there were forwards and others whereby tracks were returned because of this.

If your track needs something more to replace these sounds, maybe you can fill it in with other instrumental lines.

Best,
:D Casey

Thanks for the feedback guys. Yeah, I'm considering playing it safe. Definitely NOT using the spoken-word elements like the a-la's (that was obvious to me just because of the film/TV pitch).

I'll work around it using another ambient type synth patch or something and go for the vibe.
