Why do so many people listen but not provide any feedback?

Post by jonnie664 » Mon Apr 22, 2013 4:19 am

Been a taxi member for several years, but I haven't had much luck here in the forums. Seems that many people will listen to tracks when asking for feedback, but very few will actually leave any feedback. No worries or problem, just voicing my experience. I've chosen to delete my posts here. All the best, keep reaching for your dreams!

If I don't think I can say anything useful or encouraging then I won't say anything.

I don't recognise your name so you are either using a different name or are not a prolific poster.

Like any relationship,it helps if you make a bit of an effort.

I agree with Michael -

It takes time to build relationships around here - and being an active participant helps. A lot of things can happen when I check out a P2P post but don't leave a comment -

1) Maybe, like Michael said, I have nothing really to add, or it isn't in my wheelhouse - It doesn't mean much to just say, nice track (unless that is what you are looking for. If so, say that in your post).

2) It helps to know what kind of feedback you are looking for. Something like "how's the overall mix", "are the drums too heavy", "Does this work as a dramedy track", "is the over all groove right for xxx listing"... If I have a better understanding what you are looking for, I can better listen to try and help.

I think it also helps to be active on the forum and comment on other's P2P tracks as well. And not just offer "nice track". If there is something you don't understand, ask about it. I ask Mazz all the time "why did you do it that way and not this way"...

Just my 2 cents. The opinions expressed are mine and not necessarily that of the management... :)

Cheers

I remember seeing a feedback request posted by you. I can't remember what it was now. I do remember I listened to the song. And I do know that I did not post any feedback.

Like michael11 said, if I know that I have nothing useful to say, then I say nothing. Sometimes it is because the genre is too far from my ability to provide feedback. Sometimes it may be that a song is so good that the only thing I have to say is "Nice, good work." And I think that I should be able to provide more feedback than that. Other times maybe I can't think of anything positive to say. The last thing I would ever want to do is tell someone that I think the song sucks... in a public forum. I mean, in the first place who am I to say that?!? Plus, (speaking from experience,) THAT is a serious blow to the psyche.

I have no idea which of the above categories your song fell into for me.

There is another thing I've noticed. The timing of a post will sometimes make it un-noticeable by the people who may be able to comment properly. They may not be visiting the forums that month, or by the time they log in, your post dissapeared off the bottom of the "view new posts" "peer to peer" or "view unanswered posts."

I've seen this happen with some of my feedback requests. It will sit there for a LONG time with reads and listens, but no feedback... then out of the blue, someone who doesn't often visit the forum, will listen and be the right person to comment and that brings it up out of the dregs and someone else who can comment sees it... then so on.

But this phenomenon of listens but no feedback happens to a LOT of people.

Oh darn... and now we won't be able to search to see how many critiques you gave ;)

Here's how I look at it. First, we're all on the same side, having the same goals, hopes, dreams, etc. Second, nobody here gets paid for this and it's all done on whatever free time is available. Third, if one person replies I'm very grateful for that reply. They've gone above and beyond, taken time out of their day to reply, etc. Those that didn't reply, there's no expectation that they should or can. Now if they were paid to reply and critique my music and they didn't... then I'd have cause to be upset.

Anyway, it's about getting to know people, just general interaction. We're all in this together, all on the same side.

:D Hey Jonnie... If you hadn't deleted your posts, I would have gone back to see if I could be of help. But others before me hit it the nail on the head. You need to build relationships by giving feedback on other people's tunes, participating in discussions, etc.

Best of luck
:) Casey

I listen to most things in the P2P, but only write a comment when I feel I can contribute with something qualified, either critical or constructive or both. I try to never write posts just as a backpadding favour.. just to answer your question. I'm sure you eventually would have gotten some valuable feedback, though.. and btw, no feedback is also feedback, it's just a bit harder to interpret ;)

Thanks to all for the feedback. Actually, I had indeed left numerous comments for other peoples' tracks and general feedback over the last year or so. I asked Taxi to remove them a few months ago.

Again, no hard feelings - I'm happy to be part of the community :)

All the best, Jon

Hmmm how do You know they Listen if they don't post feedback? Just kidding, actually I listen to Everybody who posts here (whether they want me to or not). There are certain Genres I would never comment on because I know to little about them. And as for Production/Recording feedback, I aint good enough to give anyone advise on that. However, I still Listen......

"Why won't anyone give me feedback?" Because.......

I visit a ton of music websites with people asking for feedback. 99% of them all make the same mistake: they never make any friends. People that ask for feedback just come a website and talk at people instead of having a conversation.

Building relationships is not even hard. The lack of effort from people that just ask for feedback is astounding. I do not even understand why a musician would want feedback from a group of strangers.

If I want advice, I do one of two things. I either go to a professional and pay for an opinion, or I consult a friend or family member that I have a relationship with.

Taxi is a wonderful place to get professional opinions from submitting music and to get opinions from friends in the Taxi forum. The relationships really do make a difference.

So get into relationships. Don't be a promiscuous poster looking for feedback from random strangers. :D
