Waiting on a publisher

Hey all,

I did a record for a publisher I am really excited to be writing for and it's been just over 2 months since I uploaded all my stems (69 total).
I haven't heard anything since. My contracts have been completed and I know they are doing artwork and mastering....

My question is: Should I contact them about the progress? I'm dying for it to be done, but I don't want to be a bother.

What's your advice oh wise producers of cues?

Did the publisher acknowledge rcpt of the stems? You could have kept an open dialogue with the publisher by following up on the rcpt. It's a little too late to take that angle now,though.

Oh, I see by your post mentioning that you know they are in artwork and mastering that you must have some sort of "status" contact with them. So there is not a total breakdown of communication, eh?

If it's who I think it is, I'm sure they're on the job. But I know the excitement can sometimes be overwhelming.

On the other hand, Russell does ask a great question. Do you know they've received the stems? If I'm uploading via ftp, I always send a quick followup email to say the stems are up. Might be obvious but it is a good question!

Yes, they have received all the stems and we have had some brief contact since, so it hasn't been a total breakdown. I know they are super busy... I think I just have major ants in my pants!
I'm working on that patience thing.

Hey k-man.
I can't speak from personal experience but if it were me I'd be dropping them a quick message to find out where they are at.
If it was a deal over one track, but 69 tracks is a huge chunk of your work, a huge investment on your part. Don't see how you would be bother.
Just my thoughts, but again, no personal experience in that situation. Very excited for you nonetheless, amazing!!!

I'm sure everything is fine, but I may drop that note for my own sanity. I think you're right, it's not a bother as long as I'm not tugging on their pant leg every 20 minutes.

*If* the project is the kind that you are allowed to discuss, advertise or otherwise be vocal about, then maybe you can drop an email and refer to the fact that you have an update newsletter going out to your fans and you plan to include the project status in the email. This is press for them, too. It only takes, 15 seconds to read your short email and type a short answer and hit 'send'.

BUT.. if you know they have the files, and others say they're legit and all that, I personally would sit on my hands, forget the whole thing for now, and go write more tracks

I think the issue here is the status in your mind is that you are "Waiting". If you can reframe the status to be "I did what I can and it's in their hands, and they're the publisher so go let them make money for me.. " then you might feel "Done".

UPDATE: Everything is great!

Mastering, art, etc. just took a bit longer than expected since they're swamped. The ants in my pants have been subdued.
