Different Versions of Same Song to Different Libraries???
I signed a simple acoustic, no vocal arrangement version of a song with a non-exclusive library.
I also have a full band version of the song with vocal that I think fits a listing for an exclusive library.
Is it acceptable to submit the full band, vocal version of the song to the exclusive library, or am I just asking for trouble if I do so?
Thanks in advance.
Ron

Re: Different Versions of Same Song to Different Libraries??
That’s something I have asked myself Ron and the answer I came up with is,if somebody did a different version of my song,it still is essentially my song just a different version and I would probably sue for breach.
So I decided not to.
Other peoples experience may be entirely different.
Michael.

Re: Different Versions of Same Song to Different Libraries??
This is one of those sticky questions that will give an almost 50/50 result if enough people answered.
There are many threads on this exact topic. I participated in a few asking and getting feedback. The general consensus is that there are too many variables to have a real concrete answer and half will say it is OK and the other half will say no way.
My opinion is (now changed from this board) if you already have something out there in any format, it is prob best to not put another version out there in an exclusive setting cause yes, you would be opening yourself up to possible troubles. - Those troubles may never arise but why take the chance. Just write another similar song.

In my experience in signing vocal songs the publisher will want the instrumental track as well and quite possibly other alternate mixes. So it could very well be that you would be signing your instrumental track, that's already signed, to an exclusive deal. That would be no bueno.

Re: Different Versions of Same Song to Different Libraries??
I discussed this once with the owner of a library I'm in, and he was quite clear that if he signs a piece to his library, the agreement covers any and all versions, edits, arrangements, and variations based on that piece.
I think in this case you'd save yourself a lot of trouble by just writing another song.
