I do almost everything with just two: an A-T 4040 and an older AKG 451. Probably need to beef up my "collection," but mostly I'm miking acoustic guitars. The 4040 is a great all-purpose mic for not a lot of money, and very transparent; the 451 tends to impart its own sound.

Man, I love me some microphones, but at home I get by with surprisingly few. While it helps that I don't usually mic a lotta exotic stuff here at Ranchomojo, I use enough virtual instruments and ambiences that my home recording choices include just a few common styles of microphone. My first call in most situations is my Gauge ECM87 LDC; if that doesn't immediately work, I seldom need to dig deeper than my Shure SM57. Bonus, self-noise from dynamic mics is far less objectionable than that from condensers. (YMMV) I have a Radio Shack PZM that's a bit of a secret weapon, a pair of small-diaphragm omni mini-condensers [spoiler alert] usually mounted at head height, some distance from the action with each mic perpendicular to the surface it's pointed at, one being pointed at the ceiling and one at the floor. (delaying the up/down channel makes the room bigger, in case you need it in post) My live vocal mic sees a lotta duty, too; the Audix OM5 is a hypercardioid dynamic mic tailored for a condenser-like frequency response, and the narrow pickup pattern makes it great for stuff you might want to highlight in a mix. (when the studio is full of musicians and notes are flying everywhere, it's used for scratch vocals, and more than once, the scratch mic ended up on the recording) The OM5 is also pretty incredible on string bass....

Yeah 5 TLM 103s seems a little crazy. But doing a lot of ad business with voice over, we wanted to have some every day VO mics,
that we could generally use with matching preamps and have a matching sound for all our studio rooms. While a TLM 103 is not always
the best voice mic for all voices it's good in a generic sense. (similar to a U87) We don't have to worry about wear and tear on those like we might on a higher end mic.
We of course use the other mics on voice too, but the TLMs are convenient for leaving up in 3 rooms and several iso booths.

Thanks,

Keith

I see. Now that you have the experience, I wonder what line of 3-4 mics you would set up to try for a tenor male vocal a la John Mayer doing a pop/rock song?
