How much to charge for custom work?

Post by daveydad » Thu Dec 05, 2013 11:59 am

OK, this happened outside of Taxi but I could use some feedback. I have a short 60 sec instrumental being used in an ad but they want me to add two notes at the end. They asked how much I would charge for something like this. I'm pretty sure it will take me less than an hour to do. Thoughts??? Thanks!

Do they want to add two particular notes or do they just want to make it two notes longer?

They actually want two notes added so it has more closure than now. Kind of a "Dum - - Dum" sort of ending.

if I got a decent sync / master use fee for it (like 4 figures) and adding those notes was contingent on me getting the $$$ i wouldn't hesitate to tack it on or modify as needed. "gratis".

if it was hosted by a RF or other library doing Film / TV stuff, and the payout for the commercial was going to be small bones (like $100 or several hundred) then its going to be hard to justify charging much for it although it will take some time and sweat. But if it means another use of it, I would probably just get it done and move on.

If they pay you for this custom work - is it still your piece? or is there some kinda of WFH or other situation?

Andy, track was licensed from a RF site. I just chatted with the agency and they're paying me for a minimum of 2 hours of work at $40/hr. Not bad!

They trimmed a my 60 sec track down to 30 sec for use in.... ready.... a girls fingernail polish commercial!
