Re: Latin music from a Gringo... is this believable
You guys are all amazing! Thank you all SOOOO much for the suggestions, this helps tremendously. Okay, back to work. I've got five days before this puppy's due, so hopefully I can really get it cooking by then. Heck, might even have time to do another track or two for this listing! I'm gonna incorporate nearly all of these suggestions, and will post the update when it's ready for ears.
Thanks again,
P.S. Marty - those are real trumpets and flugelhorns. Played 'em myself! They're real trombones too, although those are from a Big Fish Audio sample pack, so I can't really take credit there - other than slicing & dicing them to fit with my trumpet lines.

matt, great stuff!
i don't have a prob with the piano being too hot. i would suggest--because this is LATIN--that you bring the percussion up. this will help the other instrumentation even out.
also, make sure the pushed 'and-one' and the 'one' on the lowest frequency drum are prominent. will help boost the cuban clave feel. also, maybe add the classic 3-2 pattern on a high pitch cowbell or shaker. if you're sure what all this means (but i bet you do), ask any percussionist.
nice writing and performance man!

Re: Latin music from a Gringo... is this believable
Matt,
great work in general. yu have a lot of comments that highlight some other things I would put in there.
I have some comments re: the bass.
by ear, it sounds like the harmony is Amin, to E7 (b9 maybe too which would be pretty normal).
But I am almost 100% sure the bass is playing an Amin triad and then an Emin triad, so its making the harmony "fuzzy" on the V chord. I think you are intending E7 and I would change to an Emaj triad for the bass part.
second thing is the bass is every so slightly out of the groove in a couple spots. Its a nice fat sound, just needs a little attention to the groove.
last thing is the bass cutting out and then coming back in in the last 20 seconds. you might reimagine that part and make something that is more convincing, it sounds a little random to me.

So nice to hear you again. Love it!!!
I'm such a fan of Marc Anthony..well that one song _ I Need to Know. I did a back to back with yours. I'd say one thing only to be particular - change up your bass line. Separate it from the piano. Do something really subtle and different with it.
My 2 cents. Otherwise, LOVE it!

Hmmm, I don't think that is the right comparison for this listing. That's Latin Pop, not authentic Latin music as this listing is asking for. That song would not get forwarded, IMHO, even for a Latin pop listing, it is so synthy.LittleRedChurch wrote: I'm such a fan of Marc Anthony..well that one song _ I Need to Know.

A hearty thank-you to everyone who was so kind to offer suggestions on this piece and give it a few minutes of your day. The song is much stronger as a result (and even boasts a new name!). I think I incorporated a little bit of all the advice I received on this thread. The final result is below. And with that, I'm about all Latin'ed out!

Hmmmm, I'll go back in and check that out., Andy. I forgot about your chord progression comment. I'll open 'er back up and see if the Emin is really the best chord. It seems to sit nicely to my ears as it is. But that doesn't mean it might not sit nicer with a different progression!
Thanks man,
