Great stuff from Mazz! I used to obsess over the timeline of success and what works for any given person, and I still do to a smaller degree. ;)
But, the control issues John listed are better things to focus on for sure IMHO.

My timeline:
Joined Taxi Sept 2011 (went to the rally in Nov),
First Forward April 2012 which lead to my first deal signed
First Placement Sept 2012
First Royalties March 2013

Since then I've gone to 2 more Rallies, signed a total of 8 publishing agreements and 3 more are in the works for 2014. I feel very fortunate, NOT lucky, that it's gone down the way it has. I spent some serious time listening to tons of composers and Taxi members while working on my craft with help from any source I can get my hands on (including many taxi members). I still feel like I'm just starting out and gaining momentum. Beginning year 3 of my "plan". The money isn't pouring in, but my checks have increased and I can't wait for the next royalty statement to see what happened 6 months ago. :?

My best advice to anyone is to simply NOT STOP!! Listen and try things, figure out what you do best and do it, work on your weak points and over time they become stronger and more useful....and always be pitching to new opportunities!! I'm not saying anything new here, but it's what many of these successful folks told me and I took it to heart and it IS working. :D

Onward and Upward!
Kyle

Wanted to direct this question towards Mazz if he's still watching this thread. You mentioned quality of connections, business relationships, etc. Whilw it generally comes down to the the quality of the music you submit, I was wondering if you could expand on this. In general these libraries get continually slammed with people trying to present them with music, so even if you get in the door, or at least I feel this way, you are still another face in the crowd. Maybe I'm reading between the lijes, but I suspect y my maintaining business relationships, quality of connections, you are talking about more then submitting quality tracks? Anyone else if they want to speak on this also feel free...
