Hey, you're halfway there. I'm told I'm ugly AND my music sucks! Seriously, there are a million and one reasons they can turn you down. You have serious talent and sooner or later some label will believe in you. Aretha Franklin couldn't be considered a classic beauty even in her 20s, but the cream rises to the top.Cam

Re: People from lables are JERKS!!!
Hey Fry,I had the same experience with my band awhile ago. We were all set to sign with Atlantic --- (I've said Epic/Columbia before and had a memory lapse! ).THEN, they sent the bigwigs to see a live show, and we just KILLED the crowd that night. Guess what happened? The A&R guys said our KEYBOARDIST was too fat! True story. Nothing about music, the performance, the sound, the stage presence --- just TOO FAT! I couldn't believe it, since we had a unique sound and were really a great band.So I hear ya! We did go the indie route after that, but the labels were just too underpowered to do us any good.Keep at it,Ern

At some point, if you want a record deal, you will probably have to interact with the "suits". Learning how to deal with them and speak their language may be a valuable skill to acquire. Either that, or become so big on your own, that they have to come to you, and then you might be able to call a few shots. If you want to go that route, I suggest you re-read Chris Carter's very generous posts on this thread. It's easier to change the business once you're in it. In the meantime, you might consider developing a more professional persona when dealing with professional peers, such as some folks you come across here on the forum (and other industry folks that apparently lurk here, too). You never know who might hold one of the keys to one of the doors you need to go through.I'm just saying.Mazz

Re: People from lables are JERKS!!!
Wow, I didn't read Chris' post as antagonistic at all. I thought he made some excellent points. Maybe hard to swallow-- but if people are only finding you through your myspace page, this is something to think about, as they will probably be asking themselves some the same questions that Chris asked-- but they won't be able to read your good posts here about your achievements! I'm just sayin'... No reason to feel upset-- most of the folks here are truly wanting to be helpful. And you've already received a LOT of seriously high compliments here. You just never know who's reading these boards along with us. When someone is googling for more of your information to find out about you (which they'll do if they are considering signing you), they'll find these posts. And if you were a "suit", would you want to sign you after reading these posts? The game ain't over 'til it's over, and everything we do leaves a mark in our world.I'm a successful independent artist too, Fry, so I totally understand your frustrations, where you're coming from, and I can feel your pain of wanting to gain the recognition that you deserve. It's a tough industry, but I'm a firm believer that if you keep getting yourself out there with your live events, building your fan base, and working the media, that it will continue to build, and incredible opportunities will keep coming to you. Pitch pitch pitch-- and keep doing your thing. Make your music so big that they can't ignore you! (And then you'll have to ask yourself, do you really want a major label taking over??)Cheers,Raags

Re: People from lables are JERKS!!!
Hey fella I think you're doing good stuff and going the right way, and understand your frustration. But (and I've done alright on the electro/dance artist side of things) Chris was speaking some solid truths, made politely and professionally IMO.It's a fact that if you want to be successful you need others to help you. And they'll only help you either because you're going to make them loadsa money (investors), or because they like you and what you're doing (fans, friends, family). So considering you're probably not going to make the people here on this forum much in the way of cash, if you want their help try not to p!ss them off.Besttt

FRY you just got some great advise from someone who has achieved some very nice success, but yet you respond with a post like this I didn't see anything in Chris's post that said anything derogatory towards you, but rather constructive criticism. That's something you definitely need to to master in this business. Oh yeah, a reminder this is a "business"...

Re: People from lables are JERKS!!!
Hey I'm with Chris here too. Great advice. I didn't think his post was to push you down or anything, I think he was trying to stimulate you into doing more to promote yourself. Every artist that has ever signed with a lable is because they did all the ground work till the lables could no longer ignore them. I'm think I have a great voice and potential, in fact, some of the folks here have commented on some of my work, some of us are friends on myspace and reverbnation etc. But I'm still pushing to find new ways to market myself. I recently updated my myspace page and have taken a bit more interest in ensuring that all my gigs are on these pages no matter how big or small. It's a lot of work but it has to be done. I'm not interested in a record deal or anything I just want to develop myself so that I can make great music. I've been told that the majority of A&R folks don't even wear suit most of them are the guys/gals in shorts and flip flops. Hey there are tons of folks here in Trinidad that can't sing as good as I or anything but they are more popular than I and it's because they do what Chris is talking about. So according to the great Bob Marley "who the cap fits let them wear it"
