What should I expect in a library contract?

Post by elser » Mon Jan 20, 2014 6:14 pm

I'm dealing with my first contract. We signed a contract for one song. I then added 8 more songs to our drop box and he asked "would you like to add these songs to our agreement?" I said yes. Should I expect new documentation that shows we have made an agreement on these songs? If so I haven't seen any. He also says he will register everything with my PRO and I don't need to. Is this all kosher?

Hi Jon
Some contracts specify that any other songs you provide automatically become part of the contract.

Most libraries have a "Schedule" associated with the contract (e.g. "Schedule A") which lists the songs covered. When they add new songs, they have you initial another Schedule but you usually do not have to sign another contract. It's possible that they intend to send you a new Schedule.

Nothing wrong with emailing the library asking if you need to sign additional paperwork for the additional songs. Simply ask!

And... CONGRATS!!!

:D Casey

and yes, typically, the publisher will register songs with the PRO.

sometimes they don't do this until long after signing them or when they are first used. But even if they are not registered at that point, your PRO will have a mechanism for tracking unregistered songs (like BMI has cue sheet registrations for this) or even mistitled tunes as long as the writer info is correct.

Congrats too!

Thanks my friends. Casey I have emailed this guy a number of times asking for clarification but he's doesn't respond to my questions. He's got a lot of really notable people signed so I assume he's legitimate but I can't help but worry a little bit. Thank you both for your responses.
