My website-can I use TV clip of show with my songs it?

Hi Folks,

I am getting my website put together highlighting my composing and songwriting for Film/TV.

I have had some TV/Film placements which I would like to showcase on my website.

My question is, can I link to You Tube or upload clips of footage where my music appears or do I need specific permission from the TV/Film company etc ?

I would only be showing these as examples of how my songs have been used in these productions. Some of them would be very good to be able to use if I could.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I would link to Youtube. If a copyright issue came up, Google would have to deal with it.

Even if you had it on your own site, a copyright holder would probably send a cease-and-desist. You would just have to take down the video.

If it's up on YouTube, just click the share button and grab the code. Easy. If it's a clip from a show that you either nabbed yourself or is being hosted on the network's website, I'd ask permission. Here's why, while it's true, all they have to do is send you a cease and desist letter. Is that the relationship you want with that music supervisor? No, didn't think so...

Thanks to DesireInspire and Debra for taking the time to reply to my post.
Good point Debra, would not be a good idea to annoy the music supervisor of the show featuring my music, the same show has had my tracks in 3 episodes and I hope they have more so makes a lot of sense to tread carefully and not sabotage a good thing.

Following on from last conversation. I am exploring whether I can actually get permission from the production company who make the programs using some of my music, reason being that the web designer working on my site says he was hoping to put the clips in a dedicated player which makes the page look much slicker rather than just a link to Youtube.

I imagine it could be tricky to get the right contact within the Production company to seek this permission. it may also bug them to be contacted! not sure...

In your opinions would it be an ABSOLUTE NO-NO to contact the Library who got me the placements to at least ask for their guidance if not to put me in touch with the right person?

My feeling is that they would happily advise me but it may be going too far on my part to ask for a contact etc.

What thoughts do you have please?

Hi Folks,
I really appreciate the advice I have already had regarding getting permission to use on my website TV clips from shows where my songs appear.
Ideally I would like to get permission from the copyright holders for these various shows rather than link to Youtube for example and risk getting a `cease and desist` order or just put them up on my site and risk the same. ultimately I want to keep them there not lose the use of them as they would be great to showcase
I am having some difficulty in finding the copyright holders (or licensing depts/producers) for these shows.
I feel it may be inappropriate to ask advice from the Libraries that secured me these placements in the first place as I would effectively be asking for, or appearing to ask for a direct line to their own contacts. I don't think this would be well received.
Has anyone trodden this path before or has any advice as to how they did it if successfully?
