Copyright question

So, in the past, I have usually uploaded a collection of songs to copyright.gov and call it an album because it's cheaper this way. I sell my music this way to the public but am now thinking I may not sell this way anymore since the income from it is fairly negligible. So can I still upload a number of songs and call it an "imaginary" album title instead of on a song by song basis?

You can call any group of songs a "collection" and register them the same way you always have been, one fee for N songs. The term "album" has no meaning here.

However, if you ever need to sue for infringement, the settlement will be for the % of copyright (1 song out of 12 would be 1/12th). However, you can modify the copyright to be for a single song at any time. So, if you are ever thinking about suing for infringement, change the copyright before you pursue the case.

In the meantime, this covers you without costing you an arm and a leg, and gives you a date of ownership.
