Re: the Miroslav collection

I have it and it certainly has some nice stuff on it - and the price is right! But the samples are very old (90s), so I wouldn't get this collection with the idea that it's all you will need for orchestral samples. It's definitely not (no one library is of course). Fun to have, though. Miroslav Vitous is a fantastic musician, and his musicianship shines through on this sample collection. It's very playable and musical sounding.

btw, I know these samples are from the 90s because I bought them the first time in the 90s, for use on an Emu ESI 32 (yes, I had the full monty: a massive 32 mb of ram!).

I'd recommend it too.

I use it to the best of my ability, and what I get out of it sounds fine to me.
My strings tend to be well in the background (due to that ability) but I've heard some impressive, complete orchestral
arrangements done with it.

I don't have the Miroslav, I bought the halion symphonic orchestra 16-bit for $99 a few years ago.

I hadn't until recently been using it because I thought it sounded crappy. Now I've been experimenting using midi cc controllers, primarily cc11, and I really like it. Makes a ton of difference.

I have Ik Miroslav, and really like it. Big problem I have with it is that it is only a 32 bit sample. I run my cubase and all other vst's in 64 bit so I can make full use of my pc's ram. If I try to run my sample tank in 64 there is a problem with the vst bridge crashing and you lose all the samples that you had loaded into your channel bank. Unless you save pres every few minutes you run the risk of having the bridge dump and then having to start from scratch re finding all your samples and tweaking them again. Even at best if you had the pres saved you have to reload everything instrument only to run the risk of it dumping at any given time. If IK ever came up with a 64 bit sample tank i'd make more use of it, but sadly for me I've had to move on. I've been using more 8dio and East West samples now and loving them. If you are running a 32 bit DAW, then you can't go wrong for the price that's for sure. It does look like the new sample tank 3 they are developing will have 64 bit so that might make these sample of mine relevant again.

You can't make music fun..... It is fun! You can however make it a drag.

Alan,

I couldn't pass up a deal IK Multimedia had going back in Sept. 2013. I picked up Miroslav, Sample Moog, Sampletron, and Samplesynth for I think it was $79 or something crazy. They do deals like this often. They do run in 32 instead of 64 which drives me a little nuts, but Sampletank 3 is due out very soon and then all of them will run through Sampletank in 64. I think what has been said about the Miroslav sounds is correct. They are good for the money and very good period if you work with the settings. I'm only so-so at it, but they are very useable. (IK is currently doing a great deal on Amplitube 3 - I should buy stock).

Andy,

Just to mention this. I bought an Apple Mac Pro 2x 2.8GHz Quad-core (8 Cores) Xeon (Early 2008) from http://www.macofalltrades.com a few years ago and have been able to make all OSX upgrades so far. I think Mac of All Trades is a good place to deal with. A friend of mine recently bought one similar on my recommendation and was also very pleased with the deal.

I know your waiting for the 1 Tera HZ 16 core to come out :)

I've been reading on a better way to use Kontakt for Orchestra and found that there are some things that can make it sound better (more realistic). I found these on videos and one of them was velocity curve. I'm thinking about trying to put several soloed instruments in a multi but there are problems with that. If you want each instrument to have it's own velocity curve that isn't enough as with other modulations it must be automated. - adding expression really helps.

I read a post by someone on a strings and this composer used several different libraries. Having different samples for different instruments really can add realism. I've also looked at Personal Orchestra and that has a lot to offer but, the Miroslav Philharmonik Orchestra seems to differently. I like the sounds in my 88 key keyboard and because those are external I think that's better but that's just me. To be able to add a very small late start or delay and a little space through reverb without giving it that wet effect also helps. Panning is a necessity.

I wish these software companies went the extra step and added some variation to the samples so that there not the same because this would make it easier. The only company that could do that is Spectrasonic's and I let them know. Hopefully they will have an orchestra module someday.

Hello Andy! I haven't heard from you in so long I was wondering if you were okay.

Eh, regarding Miroslav I have it and never use it. Personally I prefer the strings that come with Kontakt including Session Strings and the stock stuff with Logic. Just my opinion.
