Genre Help Please!

Hey All,
First time user who is new to TAXI. I've had a few rejections due to bad genre placement. So, before I submit this tune I'm asking for feedback on what genre this best fits into. The tune in question is called "Slip Away", it can be found on my TAXI page at:

I am listening to : "Slip Away" It has a very pleasant feel to it.
I find it very difficult to attribute a Genre to it.
So perhaps, you could do the other way round. I explain : instead of composing a Song and then face the difficulty of classifying it according to a Genre, ...
You could study all the varied Genres, (there are many), next find your Niche, as they put it, and compose ... accordingly !

Otherwise, yes, "Slip Away" is Americana, Alt Country, Folk.

I would agree with Catherine on this one.

Your song reminds me of some of the country that Charlie Pride and artists like him used to produce. I can't really place it specifically in a contemporary genre box though.

I know how you feel though! I joined taxi a little over a year ago and I still remind myself to make sure I'm starting writing my song to a specific genre rather than the other way around. I have a lot of songs that I sat down produced and then later was scratching my head trying to figure out what radio station would play it.

I have found using reference tracks on the production end to understand and create a contemporary sound to a specific genre has helped me a lot. That way I'm starting in a particular head space and not trying to identify the song after I've put all the hard work into it.

Awesome to have you digging in here. Taxi is the place to be and there are lots of helpful people around.

Hey Jason

My first impression of the song seemed more along the lines of Jimmy Buffet " Wastin Away In Margaritaville " feel. I am not sure what genre he is in. ( maybe crossover country ? ). It has that easy feel, and I believe it would fit a down home story line for film or TV.

Anyway, that's my closest guess. I hope you get more opinions. Welcome to Taxi

Yeah, Jimmy Buffet was my first thought. More the mood, than anything. There was a slight 70's feel to the drums that puts me there.

I would say Americana/folk. Some of the other tunes have a bit of country in them as well.

The guys above me have pretty much said what I was thinking – hard to classify, but with a little Jimmy Buffet.

Nathan's advice is good on choosing a song and A/B-ing yours against it, to keep you in a genre. With a few tweaks in instrumentation this could go country, imo.

I too have trouble figuring out genre nowadays since there seem to be a million more than 30-40 years ago. I hear it as folk/country, but more on the folk side. I guess that Americana is the newer word for folk. I agree with the Buffet comments. I have been writing to a specific genre after I do a lot of listening, but then I still don't necessarily hit it. Oh well we just keep forging ahead. Good luck.
