In response to your post John:
>>>"A sparse version of Lean On Me with your vocal and guitar would be unique enough to attract interest."

The message I was getting was that this version was too different compared to the original song so that even if I pitched it as a version it is unlikely to be used because its not instantly recognisable as the original song. What are your thoughts on that?

Thanks for your input.

I just meant record a simple version, like you did, without changing the lyrics or coming up with completely new melodies (if you check out my taxi page, you'll see I did a unique version of Cecilia, and that's kind of what I'm talking about).

From time to time Taxi gets listings asking for unique covers from different time periods and I thought just your guitar and voice version would be a good fit, without the re-write.

Had a listen, nice song :)

Have you been able to submit it to any listings?

And thanks for you input.

JMHO

Yes, there are requests for covers from time to time for film/TV placement. But the need for covers is significantly less than for originals. So, if you have songwriting talent, I would focus on originals unless you see specific requests for particular covers.

Nothing wrong with recording covers but I'd say if you are doing that in absence of a specific listing, good reasons to do it include honing your performance and recording skills, making tracks for your own music releases (CD, iTunes, etc), and/or practicing/playing gigs. If film/TV is your target, building a catalog of covers *may* not be the best use of your time. You never know what a particular listing for covers is going to ask for anyway.

My two cents (maybe three) ;)

Casey is right on that point - listings for covers are few. It also depends how prolific you are. I do record cover songs once in awhile just to shake things up - you can always learn by arranging other people's songs. The one I did and mentioned to you was for a specific listing.

In the end, I just liked your voice and the acoustic treatment you gave the song. Was it great career advice on my part? Probably not! ;)

Thanks for your feedback.
It is good to know what others think who are further along the track. It's early days for me and I haven't made any licensing deals yet so getting advice on what kinds of music are more likely to get placements is useful. :)
