Looking for some input
Hi Folks,
If you could take a moment to help me out... I have been trying to get this track to sound professional. I finally have a mix that I think sounds good, but I feel like it's missing low end on the bass and kick.
The composition may be a too busy on the percussion elements, as well. I was trying to be creative.
This isn't for a submission, so if you have any ideas of genre or classification that would be helpful, too. Any input is welcome. Thanks.

Listening at low volume on external (w/sub) computer speakers, I did miss the low end 'thump', too.
That stated, really like the high-energy and tension of this track.
When I do some You Tube surfing... watching videos of fast sailing (races, even) in the big, ocean-going yachts... catamarans in heavy seas, etc. there's often some very well-composed, high-energy music going on.
Here's just one sample I found in a quick search (there are LOTS more there):

Not sure how you'd pitch to that market: companies selling mega yachts, racing boats, or clubs and sponsors of world-wide racing events. What you have, imho, fits right in there.
Nice work; you always manage to get some great synth sounds going.
Cheers.

Hey, Marty,
This is not really my wheelhouse, but my gut reaction when your track started playing was that the sounds are dated. You've obviously got some dubstep influence coming through, but those straight-out-of-the-box samples make it fit neither EDM nor Retro Dance. I think Peter's suggestion is good - that you use the example he gave as a template; see if you can emulate those sounds.

Thanks Nick! Yeah it definitely isn't a dance song. I don't know if it would be ambient, either. The song that Peter referenced is more of Trance EDM. It's more uptempo and has that common four on the floor kick with the riding bass line. This song is not in that category. I uploaded an updated track with a change to the kick in the beginning of the song and a little more low end on the early on bass.
Thanks for listening!

Hi Marty,
My feeling is that the arrangement doesn't go anywhere.
It feels like it's about to take off in the beginning but it never does.
The instrumentation is overly aggressive, over compressed and disjointed.
And also dated like Nick pointed out.
Can't really pinpoint a genre for it. Somewhere in electro experimental?
Hope this helps.

Re: Looking for some input
i'll like to comment .. and to give back to the group...... although many here are far more accomplished..
i believe you need help with your kick and snare first especially with this style music (i'm getting trap and dubstep style here)
i've had this problem before with EDM .. and what i would do is:
drop all your mix faders except kick snare bass and get that fat and tight , use reference music when mixing for a/b
i feel like your using way to much compression on your master buss too,( most likely to get it loud !!)
also some compressors have low pass cut "use it " at around 200hz ( the compress wont react to low freq as much)
and you will still get the glue effect..
your snare should be parallel compressed with some dist/saturation (for this type of music) dubstep smashs the snare
your kick could be sidechained, or parallel compressed or hell both and possibly layered
and well the rest of the mix synths, efx, bla bla bla , should low pass as needed to make room for your epic kick and snare.
if you wanna sound more professional thats how some do it ... its not easy ... good luck
as far as your arrangement i would agree with pedro .. but, my advise is to get your mixing right first

Re: Looking for some input
To be clear: was not attempting to peg the genre/category of your tune. Merely suggesting that its good energy reminded me of the kinds of instrumentals that get used in videos like the sailing one I posted, purely as a sample; meaning: your track could have played just as well to that clip as the EDM piece. Sorry if that caused confusion.MartyH wrote:The song that Peter referenced is more of Trance EDM. It's more uptempo and has that common four on the floor kick with the riding bass line. I'll leave the dissecting to the production pros.
Cheers.

Not a problem Peter. I wasn't accusing you of saying something wrong. I was commenting on Nick's post about my track in comparison to the one you referenced.

Thanks for you stellar constructive and helpful comments.
As for the composition, Pedro and Nick, I was in the moment and I went with it. I wasn't trying to emulate a specific genre. I'm guessing, based on your comments, though, you don't see a home for a track like this. Compressed or Dynamic...
Thanks for taking time to listen and offer input Gents.

Hey Martin,
Yes, I don't see a home for it in it's current format.
But like you said it was done in the moment, so you let the creativity flow which is awesome.
Now comes the part where you make choices and edit it to make it into a usable piece.
Never a dull moment in the creative process
