I've written streaming applications for mulitple file formats, and don't recall ID3 tags being available in .aiff, but it's been a while... I'm looking at the file format for .aiff, and see a few text fields defined in the container. Maybe iTunes knows how to read and write to them and that's what your publisher is having you do? My experience with embedding metadata in .wav or .aiff has been all bad, and a quick search through various boards confirms that milage varies.

Moving forward, I'd like to see the industry move towards one of the lossless formats that supports the full set of ID3 tags transparently through all operating system shells.

Yes, that has been my experience. I've tagged .aiff files with iTunes following a library's directions, sent them tracks, and they picked up the tags on their end when they received them.

Yes, same here, except sometimes my tags in iTunes don't come through.. So I also use a program called "Tag and Rename."
